I have a HL-R6168W about 5 years old. It just recently started making a loud fan/vacuum like noise when the tv is on. Also the picture is distorted meaning the color is bad, greenish blue and hazy. The light bulb in the back is still on and bright so it may not be that. And the left side of the screen has about a 3-4 inch shade over the picture but you can still see through. Help with diagnosis and cost of self repair and what i need to buy to fix all problems. thank for the assistance.

Ur tv have a colors wheel design in it.Tv have buzzing,squiling or loud motor noises.Have colors turn in Black&White or flashes white within pictures.All these causes and problems are the effect of the colors wheel is dying and require repacement of the colors wheel,because it is woring out and not spinning correctly on it motor axis anymore.Have no machanical experience taking things aparts and putting it back together again.Don't atempt to change the colors wheel by ur self,bacuse the colors wheel sit way back on the tv,must take out many machanicals parts before u can even come to it to change it.Hire a Tv Tech. to change the colors wheel ok best solutions and no complication taking out the old one and putting in the new colors wheel,for it to functions correctly.

if you say that your picture gets distorted you mean like it moves to a side? do you see a black middle block?

Yes,it the colors wheel and it chasis not very good fit for long period of time,must change the flaw in design in this model.Might have to change again furture of the tv.

The color wheel has shattered. Probably a bp94-1579 or such. About a 300 dollar repair or so in home, not hard to do for a decent tech.

Check your color wheel. There is a DIY guide for replacing the color wheel. Mine did the same thing yours is and my color wheel was all busted up. Unfortunately after replacing the color wheel my set continues to do the same thing, but this could mean I need to replace the ballast as well.

sounds like you need a new lamp

The picture is pink, that would point more toward the color wheel, and you can see the fan through the vents in the back and you can go from there. It sounds more like the color wheel since you have a picture malfunction.

It must be connected with the color circuit of your tv, a board connected to back end of the tube. Could be dust, cob web or carbon deposit shorting a transistor. Popping noise if loud enough can be attributed to high voltage circuit fault and picture tube.

Have it service by a qualified person.

There are only 2 moving parts on a dlp tv the color wheel and the fan. The color wheel needs to be replaced about every 4 to 5 years. Some start to make noise and others like mine blow up with a bang. Go to utube to get instructions on how to replace it only cost me for part $100 good luck

noise you are hearing can be the fans inside with bad bearings and or what im assuming given the info you gave.More likely the motor inside the optics engine (color wheel) is making noise..This will also cause picture problems..very expensive to repair..
