Door to fridge is not clamping shut
if this is a top mount freezer, what can often happen to the fridge door is it gets bent from people leaning on it, and the bottom of the door rubs against the inside bottom of the fridge compartment, preventing the bottom of the door from sealing against the frame. you will have to remove both doors, and replace the lower hinge and any shims, washers pins that are there, tell your appliance parts store your model # and that you want all above. this will normally fix any problems.
if this is a side by side, or even a top mount as well, check also all crisper drawers, sometimes they arent firmly in correct position, and they obstruct the door. this is likely the culprit since you say it was not gradual. ive even seen some fridges that had food fallen behind a shelf, pushing it forward, and customers thought it was in place cuz they couldnt push it back any farther.
