42" Sharp Aquous audio; Mono vs. Stereo

I have tried all day to get the TV off of "Mono sound", and onto "Stereo" mode. No luck; so I called Sharp customer service, and he explained that because I have a cable box (Comcast) that it acts as the tuner, and the TV can no longer control the mono/stereo function.
1. Is that true?
2. Do I really need the cable box, if not, and I plugged directly into the TV,
could I get the stereo function back?
3. If, and when I get a HD/ DVR box from Comcast, will this solve my
problem.

So far I have read more bad reviews about the sound going out on these things during (non-HD) commersials, so how much of a gamble am I taking by upgrading to HD television?

I know how to use the remote, and no matter what I did with the audio buttons (like the manual said) I couldn't get the menu to change off of Mono. It's almost like there isn't any other option. Now I do have HBO, so I am to try direct hook up, and I am also going to check w/ Geek squad (even though thier pimple headed dildos)

I have the same issue. Whether the coax is direct to the TV or though the DVR, I get "Cable Analog, Sound Mono". Under audio setup I have Dolby Digital, and I have exhausted all other menus in my extensive exploration for a solution.

I have the 32" version with the same problem. I've tried mulitiple configurations of the cables in the back with no luck. As Cainfury said, I've tried all the remote/menu configurations as well. I'm hoping there's some magic cable somewhere that I'm just no hooking this thing up right.

No. that is not true. the person you spoke to obviously didn't know what they were talking about. you mean to tell me that everyone that has a cable or satellite box with a stereo or hd tv is not going to receive stereo sound? really, think about it. you only need a cable box( for now ) if you have premium channels (hbo, showtime etc). you can connect the cable line right into the tv if you only have basic cable. look at the back of your cable box. if you have a red, white, & yellow audio/video output, then the box is stereo.connect these outputs to your tv. this connection however is not hd.you will need a hd box with a hdmi cable for hd .To put the tv on stereo mode, there should be a way via the menu and/or the audio button on the remote to get it off mono and put it on stereo. your manual should at least show you around the settings of your tv.

My television is not in stereo mode. How do I get it back to stereo mode?

This television has to be on input tv for you to be able to press the audio button and switch between mono and stereo. Otherwise you will not be able to use that feature of your television. When you are connecting devices to inputs 1,2,3 or any of the hdmi inputs you are getting stereo sound though you are not able to choose it with the Sharp remote.

Input tv is for an antenna or for a cable cord directly connected to the television without the cable box (not satellite tv).

Can't change from MONO to AUTO mode

Hello
Can't make sound from mono to auto is your problem I thinks and posts this solution.
Hit the "Menu" button and surf through, come to "Sound Adjust" window.
The settings allow you to change and adjust sound in your TV. There are Bass, Treble and Balance control to adjust to your individual taste.
To adjust them
1. Press Menu button.
2. Press UP or DOWN button to select the desired item.
3. Press => or 4. Press EXIT button when finished.
When adjusting the parameter of "Balance" control, always set it to mid position to get stereo sound from both speakers. If it is set to any extreme end, there will be no output from the speaker of that side, and will hear as mono.
If you press "0" [Zero] button, you can reset the sound settings to it Factory settings.
To select 'Streo mode;
1. Press "Menu" button.
2. Press UP or DOWN button to select MTS [Multi-channel Telivision Sound].
3. Press => or [The ON AIR arrowtells you if a broadcast is in stereo AND/OR contains the SAP.
Press "Exit" button when finished.

Keep the TV in stereo mode to get the best sound quality. The sound will work in stereo

mode even if a certain broadcast is in mono sound only.

Choose the mono setting to reduce excessive noise on a certain channel or broadcast.
Selecting SAP will allow you to hear an alternative soundtrack, if one is available.

Audio only has mono how do you change it

If you open the menu, there should be an option for sound. If you have a universal remote, you will probably have to do it with the buttons on the TV.SAP and stereo are about the same.It most likely cycles through mono, stereo,SAP with the volume button.Good luck!

Audio with digital channels, no audio with analog channels

I was getting a constant mono setting for all channels with no option to set it to stereo. I called Sharp, and they said that in order to receive stereo sound, you cannot use a standard coaxial cable. You need an S-Video or HDMI cable. This not only resolves the mono audio issue but also resolves the analog (vs. stereo) issue. Hope this helps!!

Mono sound only

I have an LC42D64U with firmware U0709111. This is an 11 month old unit. It was working fine until I lost power one day, then I couldn't get any sound. It always showed up as Audio: mono. I tried every setting and nothing (although XBOX via HDMI still played though the onboard audio, so I knew it wasn't a HW issue).

After searching around for a method to change the mono/stereo I resorted to the Fred Flintstone's fix and simply pulled the plug on it. Immediately after turning it back on it worked.

This is hardly a fix but it worked for me.

No audio on select channels

Go into the TV's menu and see what type of audio mode its set on. If it says sap turn on to stereo or mono. If it says stereo, set to mono. Also try to unplug set for 12 to 24 hours.
