Question about RCA RP5430 Clock Radio

1 Answer

Help I received an RP5430A clock radio this past Christmas and it is now doing strange things. I always listen to the FM stations but I cannot even tune in to an FM station. The radio appears to be doing a seek/scan to the best station but it keeps going through the various FM stations but it never tunes in to one particular station. When I switch it to AM it will allow me to tune in to one station but the station is not tuned in properly (i.e. oldies 1310 comes in on 1317!). I've unplugged the radio, tried it in different locations in the house and it still does the same annoying thing. HELP! I'm ready to trash it and it cost me some $40.00!

I just bought this clock radio about 2 weeks ago and just a few days ago it started doing strange things, too. Looks like (even though the radio was turned off) it was trying to search for stations. I unplugged it and plugged it back in after a couple hours and it was fine for a bit, but then started doing the same thing again! Of course, I threw the receipt away from when I purchased it from Target so I am unable to return it or even just exchange it.

The clock display randomly changes to an FM channel and appears to be "scanning" even with the radio off.

Mine would display an FM station at times also. Then the display went out I sent it back for replacement. See my other post on warranty.

I bought one of these at curcuit city last year and one by one the LED number segments are slowly dying. Three of them are dead now, and reading the time is quite difficult at this point (needless to say, i got a new one later). I was just absolutely amazed at the poor poor quality of this clock, i've never seen anything break down so fast.

I did some reasearch on RCA and found out that they have been long gone broke and broken up, parts of it sold off repeatedly. according to wikipedia, the RCA consumer electronics brand is now owned by some french company called THOMSON SA, and quality has been on the decline ever since. wow

Possible solution for some of the problems listed: Turn the clock upside down so that the label is readable in the upper left area. On the right side you will find a compartment which may have two "AA" batteries installed. These back up the setting when the clock is unplugged.

To reset the clock, you will have to BOTH remove the batteries AND unplug the AC power cord. Also, make sure the batteries are not dead.

Finally, although I cannot confirm this, there is an opening directly under the label (still looking at the bottom of the clock) which appears to be a "Reset" switch. A pointed object such as a ballpoint pen or toothpick will be needed to press this recessed button. Hope this helps. Mine is working just fine.

No Sound on AM or SW

Hello
If the set receives FM signals without any problem, and only fails to receive AM signals, the IC [integrated circuit] used in it is faulty. The number of the IC used with your radio is CXA 1376AS. It is a replacable type IC, and can be bought from most of the electronic spare part shops at your town. If you want further details about its service manual, get me by Fixya. OK.

FM reception for Sony ICF-CD513?

The electrical cord acts as an antennae for this radio. Uncoiling the cord will give the best reception for FM. Rotating the radio (and built in ferrite bar antennae) will give the best reception for AM listening.

Improve reception

HI there,

Well Yes you can improve the reception, please follow the below steps -

Improve FM Radio Reception -

1. If you don't have an antenna connected to your FM receiver, purchase a simple dipole antenna--a simple T-shape flexible wire-- and connect it to the FM antenna inputs on the receiver. Because FM signals are directional, you'll want to experiment with the positioning of the wire to find the best reception of the station you're trying to receive.

2. If you're still not getting a good signal, try an indoor amplified antenna, which you'll find at an electronics store. Don't buy one unless you get a guarantee that you can return it for full credit if it doesn't solve your reception problems.

3. If your signal is weak because you live a long way from the transmitter, install an outside antenna and mount it as high as is practical. If you're primarily interested in getting signals from one station or from a group of stations in one direction, get a directional antenna and point it toward the transmitters.

4. If you're using a portable FM radio where the only antenna is the power cord, stretch the cord as straight as possible and experiment with positioning again.

5. Temporarily switch to monaural mode to improve a weak signal on an FM receiver.

Improve AM Reception -

1. Gradually rotate the radio 360 degrees. Leave it in the position where it sounds best.

2. Reverse the AC plug if it isn't polarized. (If you can flip the plug over, then it's non-polarized.)

3. Plug the radio into a different AC outlet.

4. Move the radio closer to a window.

5. Experiment to learn if appliances and powered products in your home are causing interference: computer monitor, television, electric blanket, light dimmer, fluorescent light, hair dryer, air conditioner, smoke detector. If possible, turn off the offending item. Otherwise, move the radio to another room.

6. Upgrade to an external antenna if your receiver, tuner or radio has a place to connect one.

7. Buy a passive AM antenna that doesn't need to be connected to a radio or receiver.

Good Luck!!

Thanks

I have the same problem and not just with the FM tuner. I have spoken to Aluratek about the sluggishness of this radio. Their reply was to not push the buttons ore than once. The radio will eventually work.

Hummmmmmmmmmm

Are you listening to AM or FM? If you are listening to AM, trying rotating the radio. You may be picking up some type of local AM interference. If it's happening on FM....then I guess there is always a possibility that you may have a defective power supply and what you are hearing is the hum from that.
