Hello Gerjoy06

Thanks for the good thoughts. :)

If yours is a Recovery or System Restore CD provided by IBM w/ that particular model computer, then, no, you will likely not need the OS CD.

I have seen some instances where the OS CD and the recovery CD were needed. So, I can't be certain w/out knowing the model and, possibly, the serial no. of that computer. Chances are, however, that you will not need the OS CD.

Please, make sure that you have backed up all of your data as the restore CD will format your hard drive as part of the System Restore process.

I also recommend that you download all the latest drivers from IBM/LENOVA for that computer and burn them all to a CD-R disc before you begin the restore process. It could save you some trouble.

If the manufacturer did not send Recovery Disks with the system, you need to go to the support site for IBM/Lenovo (http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/homeLenovo.do?country=us) and find the number for the support line. Call them and ask them to send you a set of Recovery Disks. If they will, it's usually no more than $30 to buy them from the manufacturer.
Once they arrive, load them into the laptop in order (they should be labeled 1, 2, 3, etc...) and run them until completion. Bear in mind that this will NOT make your laptop as fast and as amazing as it was on day 1. You may need to upgrade the various drivers on the machine to their latest counterparts (BIOS, Chipset, Video, etc...) in order to achieve the results you seek.
Good luck!!

You probably need an OEM version of XP...not that IBM version. If you buy an OEM version, you can use it many computers. A real XP disc will partition, format, and delete partitions on any functioning Hard drive. Don't buy a recovery disc, please. That just sounds WRONG.

A cheaper solution might be a new Hard Drive...but I don't trust your IBM version of XP.

Cd disk winXP software

You would need to contact IBM/Lenovo and ask for a recovery disc. As the software is OEM they need to provide the support for it. The other option is to purchase a copy of windows XP but you will be paying for another license

Access IBM Button does nothing-- need it to start my comp up

Hi,
The Access IBM button is F11. This lets you boot the recovery partition. It is possible the previous owner removed the recovery partition to regain the hard disk space it uses.

If the recovery partition is gone, you can order the recovery disks from IBM/Lenovo.

Also, make sure you have the BIOS boot sequence in the correct order.. the primary boot device should be the cd-rom for installing the Vista disk. It is usually F8 on startup to load the BIOS.
Make sure the Vista disk is in the drive when you startup the install.

Here's a link to all the Thinkpad R50e drivers you'll need to get it fully working in Vista:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-55042.html

If you have just formatted, have you let the Vista disk finish the installation? Just a thought..

Good Luck!

How to reformat R52 ibm thinkpad

Your laptop should have come with a recovery disk, you will need to boot to that disk following the onscreen steps for formatting and restoring the operating system files. Furthermore, if your system did not come with a recovery disk, or you have a Windows XP/Vista disk you can boot to that instead.

Windows XP Install:

After the installation system boots, the setup prompt will prompt you for searching the system for previously installed versions of Windows; bypass the recovery option after the search is complete. The setup will then display a list of Hard Drives to install Windows; follow the key for deleting the partition (press "D" to delete). Once the partition has been deleted highlight the "free hard drive space" and press "Enter" then you will be prompted to format the drive and install Windows. Moreover, you should right down the Windows Product Key off the sticker on the bottom of your laptop; you'll be asked for that key after the setup restarts your computer assuming you are using that license for that version of Windows.

Windows Vista Install:

When you boot to the Vista DVD you will be prompted to enter the product key as soon as the setup loads. Select the Hard Drive with the mouse, then left-click the format button on the right pane. Continue with the installation.

How to get a new driver installer

Using another pc, download the driver for the model of LAN card used. Goto the control panel - system - device manager and unistall the card (keep hardware attached to pc) and reboot. Use the downloaded driver to reuninstall. When it gets back online, do the same thing with any other device not working. Be sure to get the drive for the operating system used.
