Hmmm What software do you need? You should not need software to run the HDD. Just plug it in. You can get the One Touch software from Seagate (who no own Maxtor) See http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?locale=en-US&name=ot4-downloads&vgnextoid=0ed72c9e46914110VgnVCM100000f5ee0a0aRCRD HTH
Right click on my computer and go to manage, then go to storage, disk manager and see if the disk shows up there, you may need to partition it first, you can make one partition of that hard drive. If it is not in there, check the jumpers and make sure it is not the same as the main HD. The main drive should be master and the second drive should be slave, or make it cable select and do it in the bios.
Was the original 20Gb HD also a SATA or was it installed as an IDE?
Try installing a fresh clean Windows rather than the restore disc. However, you will need the drivers for the SATA 160Gb and press F6 when Windows installers ask you to.
Post back how things turn up or should you need further information. Hope this be of some idea/help.
Good luck and kind regards.
