Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

My D-Link DSL 300T Modem has stopped distributing IP addresses despite the setup page saying that this feature is enabled. This is leading to a constant error message as the IP address is the same as the router. I am running an iMac 2.8 Ghz and MacBook Pro with Leopard 10.5.2 on both. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Alex

I have a lap top,i bought a router Q.how can i connect without lost the office internet line?

jromero608

To connect your router to your network with out losing your Internet connection will depend on what kind of modem your have. If you have a modem with a built in router in it you can connect it to one of the extra network ports on the modem.

However if your modem does not have a router built into it you will have to disconnect the modem for a short time to connect the router into the network.

Note if your have a modem with a router in it the best thing to do is let it keep assigning IP addresses and turn on the DHCP server in your router and use it just as wireless access point. To do this you will need to set it to the same IP group that you already have on your network. So example if your modem has an IP address of 192.168.5.1 you will want your router the routers IP address to 192.168.5.2. The third number section is what is important. If you do not currently know the IP address of your modem and it is connected directly to your computer the link below will help you determine the IP address of the modem. The IP address listed as the gateway IP address should be the IP address to your modem. Note if you already have a router in your network this will be its IP address.

If you need more help and/or have trouble getting everything setup let me know the make and model of your network devices and how you have them connected so I can see what we need to do to get you setup with your new router.

I had compaq d310v yesterday i installed windows 7 .but internet does not connect.2 computer icon states that thier is no any connection, but i uses dsl

You may need to setup/ config your gateway ip address, and/or input a primary DNS address in your TCP/IP settings on your network properties. The gateway address should essentially be the ip address of your dsl router. The dns would be the same address.

To enable gateway and dns, however, you will also need to assign a static ip address to your computer. Which would be an address in the same range as your routers ip. EG, if your routers ip is 192.168.0.254, Then you could use any address Under 254, eg 192.268.0.105, Or 192.168.0.88, And so on.

Please reply to this posting If you require more clarification.

I post solutions/fixes on my site www.yama.co.za/forum Please take a visit if you can.

I cannot connet to the internet have wrt100

Try to reset your router first by Pressing the reset button on the back for about 15 seconds let go then pull out the power. After that plug the power back in then try to set it up according to the directions at the link below. If after the reset you are still not able to access the 192.168.1.1 Turn off the modem first then turn off and on the router and restart your computer but leave the modem off. If youa re able to access the router page. Chagne the local or router IP on the setup page as your modem might be on the same IP. this is only applicable if you are on DSL. If on cable you just have to reset and follow the directions at the link below for Cable.

I lost the instructions on how to install a Linksys wireless router. I would like to down load these instructions.

cable setup

This guide is recommended for Cable Internet Service in the USA like Charter, Cox, Comcast, Cable Vision, etc.
  1. First you need to connect the device together. You need to connect your cable modem to the internet port on the back of the router, and the computer should go to one of the 4-port on the router labeled Ethernet (1, 2, 3, 4).
  2. Then turn on the modem first, wait for the lights to stabilize before powering on the Linksys router. Lights that you should have on the router are Power (solid green), Wireless/WLAN (Green sometimes flashing), One of the no. lights where the computer is plugged in (flashing), And the internet light (flashing).
After doing this step there are times that this will already get you online. If the internet will not work, you continue following the steps 3.

3. If the internet is still not working; we will need to adjust a setting on the router setup page. To access the setup page of the router you need to open your internet explorer or Firefox on the computer that is hardwired directly to the router. In the address bar of your browser (Internet Explorer or Firefox) type http://192.168.1.1/ and hit enter or click Go. It will ask you for a username and password. Just type "admin" for the password field and there is no username. If you have ran the setup CD prior to this, then use the password that you have set when were running the setup CD.
4. Once you are in the setup page of your router make sure that the Internet Connection Type is set to Automatic Configuration DHCP, then click the save the settings button at the bottom of the page. After saving the settings, click the sub tab at the very top of the page that says MAC Address Clone. Set it to enable and click the button that will say Clone or Clone your PC's MAC and save the settings again.

5. After doing step 4, do a power cycle. Power cycle is done by turning of the router, modem and computer. Leave them off for a minute, tuned them back on in this order. Modem first wait for the lights to stabilize, then the router wait until the power light become solid. Then turn on the computer. This will get you online through the router.

5. On the left of the "Status" page you will see "PPPoE Enabled", and to the right you will see the Status of the connection. It can be one of the following:
- Disconnected
- Connecting
- Connected
6. If the status is "Connected" you should be able to browse the web, if not reboot your computer
7. If you get an error message please repeat the "Configuring the router" and "Power Cycling" steps with a different username.
- If all four connections fail then please see our knowledge base articles on the error you're getting.
Once the router is configured correctly you should change the default password and record it for reference.
You should also add the "Enter Network Password" page to the Favorites List, and review the user manual.

My computer keeps telling me I do not have an internet connection when I connect my router. I can unplugg the router and plug it back into my dsl modem and the internet again works. why won't my router...

More info would be helpful, but I am assuming that you have a router device that is not the DSL Modem, maybe a linksys, or something? Most likely what is happening is that the DSL modem is assigning private IP addresses, like 192.168.1.x, and the router is obtaining that IP address on its WAN interface, but is also configured for the LAN at 192.168.1.x, which is the same subnet, so it cannot route packets to the internet properly, as both interfaces have the same network range. Can you give me more info? I can try to walk you thru step by step.
Step 1. Verify current IP address when internet connection is working. (Go to a command prompt and type ipconfig, press enter, and document what your IP address is, also document the gateway address and subnet mask)
Step 2. Connect to the router instead of the DSL modem, do the same thing, document your IP address, gateway, and subnet mask
Step 3. Compare the two, your IP may be different, and the gateway may even be different, but see if both are trying to use the same IP range.

If they are the same, or close (the first 3 octets(set of numbers) are the same) then you will need to configure the lan side of either your DSL modem, or the router to be on a different IP address.

To do this will vary depending on the model of your router, so if you respond in the next few hours, I will still be online, and will try to assist.

We recently got high speed internet from Qwest. It will not work. It keeps saying that the can't "ping" it. All light are green; power DSL, and the Ethernet. The internet is not. I have...

The DSL router/modem will receive an address from your ISP (Qwest) and will assign an address to the connected PC.

There should be a cable that goes from your DSL modem to your PC. It'll either be a USB cable (flat rectangular plug on the PC end), or a RJ45 (looks like a wider telephone plug).

If there is neither connection between the DSL modem and your PC, then the PC can't "talk" to the DSL modem, so it's not getting an address from the DSL modem.
