PANASONIC DMR-E65S When you put a disc in lcd displays read then self check after a while lcd flashes then goes back to self check ,only way you can get disc out is to unplug and turn on any suggestions plz would be grateful I have the same problem. Won't read disk keeps returning to self check. Interestingly I put the machine away for a few weeks and just before disposing of it had another try, reset to the machine to original factory settings and it worked for a couple of weeks then went back to it's bad habit. I've tried reloading firmware. What I want to do is reload the software see if that helps but I don't know where to start. I've scoured the internet but it doesn't seem to be available. Any suggestions R

Hi,

Does the player make squealing noises or is it totally quiet? Squealing noises may indicate that the player is trying to synchronize with the disc but can't due to an obstruction on the lens or in the laser path inside the pickup or a defect in the pickup. This can also be caused by an intermittent signal problem due to a faulty ribbon cable.

Totally silent means that the photo sensor is not getting any usable input from the laser at all, meaning that the pickup is "blind" for lack of a better word.
This can be caused by an obstruction of the beam by foreign matter on the lens or inside the pickup all the way to a marginal or failed laser diode and/or photosensor array. This can also be caused by a bad ribbon cable with one or more severed traces.

You could try to clean the optics. This is the most common malfunction as far as i know in all disc players. It would involve taking the cover off and finding a way to expose the lense, and then cleaning it with a very gentle brush. some players have a cover for the lense that swings to the side during playing, this greatly reduces the chance of dust accumulating, but its still worth the try.

If you actually see dust on the lense, then its just that simple. clean, close, play.

It may also be worth your while to check on the small shafting that guides the carriage of the laser pickup. Dirt, grome, dust and solidified lubricant can cause stoppage of the carriage and the laser eye then fails to read the next track. Please refer to the image below.

Try playing an audio CD on your device, just to isolate the failure. If the audio CD plays fine, it means the laser on the DVD side could be defective.

Self checking

I have had a Panasonic DMR-E85 with this exact same problem you are describing. As I bought a Freeview Dual-tuner PVR I just bought a second-hand DMR-E55 as I liked the Panasonic interface. Two months down the line it is now exhibiting the exact same problems, except now as well as the continual self-check rebooting, it's also refusing to eject the disk. Booo. Time for me to buy a new DVD recorder again, and this time certainly not Panasonic... :(

My panasonic dvd recorder is showing error screen u61, but what ever i do it does not solve the problem, ''self check did not complete''

First is there a disk in the dvd drive? If so it must be removed. have you tried a factory reset? Press and hold the up and down channel buttons on the front of the unit until the unit displays BYE then after it shuts down unplug it from the AC outlet for about 30 seconds then try to turn it back on it should be back in the first time setup.

Will my non finalzied discs play on a panasonic ez 28 or ex 768

You will have no problem playing your non finalized discs on any of the Panasonic DMR range including the DMR EZ28 series. The DMR E55 can also easily be repaired if you can use a soldering iron and a little care. Please checkout my other postings for full repair details.

ekimt,

Yes, it would not recognize any type of disc. The disc icon was always present on the display even though no disc was inserted. Also, mine went out while recording from HDD to DVD. Panasonic had mine repaired in two business days and it' s working great.

try other types of media- it's possible there's a malfunction in the motor drive electronics.

DVD Recorder keps re-starting self test & will also not finalize discs.

This seems to be a common problem with the E55 and E85 models, could be one of two things, either the RAM Drive or the Power control ic (STRG6353 primary side of PSU), i would suspect its the latter. You'll need an engineer to replace this component.
