My laptop is MD 41700 and my problem is that is getting very hot near DC connection after less than 1 hour of working and it's doesn't metter is plug in to DC or not. What can this be and how much will cost me to fix it???

U only have to buy a fun for ur power supply..coz maybe,,ur power supply fan cant accomodate the heat caming from ur power supply..

Are all computer batteries the same size?


The short answer is "No"

The long answer is:-

Physical size, input and output voltages, output capacity and the connection type to the PC varies from one PC to another.
If you are asking about batteries for your particular PC, then there are four things that need to match the PC's requirements, they are-:

Physical size, has to match the space provided for the battery.

Voltages, the output voltage from the battery to the PC must match the voltage required by the PC. (This can be found in the handbook, on the back of the PC, or the manufacturers website.

Battery Capacity, this is stated in one of two ways. either, in Wh,(watts per hour) or Amps, the higher this number, the longer it will run your PC.

Connections, this must marry-up with the connections on the PC.

For instance, the battery information label for my Inspiron 1720 reads as follows:-
Rating: 11.1v === Capacity 56Wh which means,
Voltage; 11.1 volts (=== DC), less than this and the PC will not run, more than this WILL damage the PC
Capacity; 56Wh means, if the PC uses 56 watts per hour, it will run the PC for one hour. If it uses 28Wh, (56/2=28), it will run the PC for two hours.
The higher the Capacity, i.e ??Wh the longer it will run the PC and will not harm your PC but, increased capacity batteries commands a price.

When it comes to the Power Supply Unit, (PSU), or "Charger"
Input: AC 100-240 volts ~ 1.5A 50/60Hz (~ refers to AC)
Output: DC 19.5 volts = 4.62A (= refers to DC)

Input from the wall socket of Alternating Current anywhere between 100 and 240 volts at 1.5A at 50 or 60 Hertz. In other words this PSU will work world wide with the right plug adaptor, (if needed), to convert the existing plug to the wall socket of the country you are in at the time.

How to test your AC/DC Adapter or Computer Power Supply Unit.


A PSU or Power Supply Unit aka AC/DC adpater is then means by which a low tension (voltage) appliance receives its power from the 240 AV mains supply, the this is usually accompanied by the nominal current that is drawn from the PSU on load in milliamps. (e.g. 500mAmps = 0.5 Amps) most modern DC adapters are unregulated, where the output voltage is only regulated by the load current, and a smoothing Capacitor is sometimes used to reduce AC ripple on the DC Level.
If the PSU is regulated the DC Voltage that you measure using an AVO even off load will be the same as the rated current.

Also most, not all, are double insulated (indicated by small square inside a larger one) this means that it doesn't need a earth on the plug, the give away is a plastic pin instead of a metal one found in most domestic plugs with a 13A fuse.

Using Ohms Law P= I x V means that we can find out either the Current in Amps Power in Watts or the Voltage of any unit this is also called the VA rating

The Simple test is if the adapter gets really hot as soon as the you apply AC power then this may indicate catastrophic failure OR a dead short and you must turn OFF immediately the plastic may even start to melt, you may also smell electrical burning. This will also happen if you ever use a non-specific adapter on your device that has a different output voltage this will almost certianly cause damage to your device.

The main test if to test the step-down transformer using an AVO (Amps Volts Ohms) this is what is used to reduce the 240V ~AC voltage to something more in line with the required DC supply say 14-16V ~AC, a diode bridge converts this to DC, if it is regualted there will be either and either a zener or resistor drops this to the rated 12V and a capacitor to smooth the level.
You need to make sure this is socket is working correctly by checking with either a lamp electricians screw driver or a AC test plug, dont use this socket you have an earth fault or someother problem, usually two lines at the outside of a AC socket tester means all is correct.
  1. First measure the resistance (Ohms) across the two AC pins that is the Live and Neutral this should have VERY low resistance in the range 300 to 2,000 (2K) Ohms. if this is the case then your primary winding is probably OK if you see 1 on all settings this means open circuit (O/C)
  2. Then connect the power supply to a 240V AC socket, and check the output voltage with multimeter set at volts DC you should see a stable voltage of the rated value for a regulated adapter or slightly higher by about 5% if its unregulated as this is a reading off load, if you were able to test the voltage with the adapter on load you would see the rated DC voltage.
  3. If you connect an unregulated AC/DC adapter to the device and open up the cover to test it under load and the voltage is low around 5V or less then the adapter will need replacing even if the off load value appears correct in above test ( ** ref the table below)
NOTE: If you have a AC only output then the test done in 1 can also be done, if there is a diode bridge, Zener Dicde OR Capacitor on the secondary this test wont work so you might have to remove the cover by unscrewing the tamper-proof screws and test it before the connection to the PCB, without the power on of course, check out my tip HERE for help on how to remove the screws.

If you have a faulty power supply its usually the thermal fuse that blows on the secondary winding, this means that you will get considerably less Voltage at the output jack of around 5 VDC or less and falling if this is the case the transformer is faulty and will need to be replaced with one of the same step-down ratio. OR you will need a new AC/DC Adapter, check out this table for examples of the results that you might find.

** The Amstrad Black PSU that reports 24V and 383 Ohms on the primary may still not deliver the rated voltage under load and therefore I have marked this as a false positive and therefore FAULTY.

NOTE: The AC/DC Chargers are constant current devices (the symbol is usually two interlocking circles and even though you can do similar tests on the transformer primary coil its the current that it delivers under load that is important the only way to test this is using a clamp meter on the cable to see the current under load this should match the rated current.

Most ATX power supplies are known as switched mode can only be tested under load when connected to the PC motherboard this is a bit tricky using a plain old Fluke, AVO or Multimeter the best way is to buy dedicated PSU tester for the type of Power Unit you have, it will check the DC voltages in the range + 12V,-12V,+5V,+5VBs and +3.3V on both the SATA and IDE supply cables these cost about £20 ($35) you can test the unit in as little as 5 mins.

Check the device manager to see if the card reader is there. Or go to the manufacturers site (HP in your case) and download and install the driver for the reader.

Why my psu gets hot when its on for 1 hour then get hottier after 2 hours or more but the fan in psu works ?


PSUs get hot regardless. If it's not adversely affecting your computer (i.e. it shuts off, it slows down tremendously, etc...) then it's nothing to worry about. Remember, a lot of current goes through the PSU and that conversion of energy is going to cause heat (as a loss of energy). Especially since this is (I assume) one of the Slimline models with an external PSU it's converting AC to DC to power the unit, you're going to notice it because there's no fans running to cool it down.
It's the same with any desktop model with an external PSU. I wouldn't worry about it. But if you're concerned, just make sure it's not on any carpeting, put it on a surface that will help dissipate the heat (something metal) and see if that helps at all.

It sounds like you have a damaged charger jack on the motherboard. You can either take it to a service center for repair or fix it yourself if you are handy with a soldering iron. Cost to repair should be less than $50. This is not an uncommon problem on laptops.

This is more of a system diagnosis that an actual motherboard testing procedure, but since all components attach to the motherboard in one way or another it could count as a prcess of elimination......

Laptop is dead. How to troubleshoot the problem.
In this post I’ll explain how to troubleshoot a dead laptop and find the problem. The following troubleshooting tips are not model and brand specific, they should work for most laptops.
Let’s take a look at two different scenarios.
Example 1. The laptop is absolutely dead.
When you plug in the power adapter and press on the power button, there is no signs of life at all. The laptop will not make usual noises, LEDs will not light up, the fan will not spin, the screen is blank and black, etc… In short, the laptop is dead.

What you can do in this case?
1. Make sure the wall outlet is working and the laptop DC adapter is getting power from the outlet. Try another wall outlet.
2. Test the laptop DC power adapter, make sure the voltage output is correct. You can test the DC power adapter with a voltmeter.
3. Let’s say the DC adapter is fine and the adapter outputs correct voltage. In this case unplug the power adapter from the laptop, remove the battery, wait for 1-2 minutes, plug in the adapter and try turning on the laptop again.

OK, you tested the adapter and it’s bad. If you decide to replace the original DC adapter with a generic one, you’ll have to follow this rule:
The voltage output on your new adapter has to be exactly the same as on the original adapter. The amperage on the new adapter could be the same or higher.

If nothing helps and the laptop is still dead, apparently the motherboard is fried or there is a problem with the DC power jack. It’s possible the DC power jack is broken and the motherboard is not getting any power from the adapter. In this case you’ll have to disassemble the laptop and replace the power jack.
Example 2. When you plug the DC power adapter and press on the power button, the laptop starts making normal noises, the LEDs work properly but noting appears on the screen. The laptop will not start.
First of all, take a closer look at the LCD screen. Look at the screen under bright light. It’s possible that the image is still on the screen but it’s very faint.
If there is no image on the laptop LCD screen, test the laptop with an external monitor. Connect an external monitor to the VGA port on your laptop and turn the laptop on. You can toggle video output between the internal LCD screen and external monitor by pressing Fn and F4 keys simultaneously on HP laptops, Fn and F5 keys on Toshiba laptops, Fn and F7 keys on IBM laptops. Other laptops may use different key combinations.
Let’s say the external monitor works fine but the internal LCD screen has no image at all. If that’s the case, your problem could be related to the LCD screen or the video cable. Also, make sure the video cable makes good connection with the motherboard and the LCD screen. Try reconnecting, reseating the cable.
In my case, both internal and external monitors were absolutely dead. Neither of them had image. That means the problem is not related to the LCD screen or the video cable. From my experience I know that this problem could be related to the laptop memory.
Try reseating the memory module, maybe it’s not making good connection with the memory slot. Try cleaning contacts on the memory module with pen eraser. Try moving the memory module into another slot. Try replacing the memory module with another known good module, it’s possible that your original module is dead.
If you have two memory modules installed you can try removing them one by one, it’s possible that one of the modules is bad. Try installing different memory modules into different memory slots.

In my case reseating, swapping the memory module didn’t help. I was pretty confident that my problem is not memory related and I moved on.
Try removing battery, hard drive and DVD drive and turning on the laptop without these components.
Also, try turning on the laptop with an external monitor when the video cable is unplugged from the motherboard. If the laptop start with video on the external monitor, apparently there is something wrong with the laptop display panel.
Finally, disassemble the laptop and removed the motherboard.
1. Motherboard. Like on most laptops, in my case the video card is integrated into the motherboard
2. CPU with heatsink and cooling fan.
3. Known good memory module.
4. The power button board witch you need to turn on the system.
5. Working DC power adapter.

Still cannot get any video on the external monitor. The system turns on, the cooling fan starts spinning but there is no video.
At this point I’m 95% sure that the motherboard is dead. CPU failures are not very common, so it must be bad motherboard.

Laptop died suddenly and is not charging


Take the battery out and discharge the capacitors by holding down the power button for 15 seconds. plug in the charger without the battery in to see if you get a charge light. If you do, replace battery and plug in charger and power on laptop. If this does not work, you may have to pull the cmos battery for 15 minutes and try it again.

Dead Toshiba A100 laptop computer


In order to replace the power jack in your laptop you’ll have to remove the jack from the motherboard as I explained in the previous post: Replacing DC power jack.
While removing the jack you can accidentally pull out the internal copper coating (I’ll call it a sleeve) from the inside of the “+” terminal as it shown on the picture below.

The internal copper sleeve has been removed and cannot be installed back. If you solder the power jack back on the motherboard without this sleeve it might work but the connection between the “+” lead and motherboard will not be reliable.
In the following guide I explain how to fortify a damaged power jack connection. You can use this repair technique in some laptops with similar power jacks.

When i plug in my charger to my laptop it doesnt work and i dont know whats wrong with it


This issue can be caused by any of the below possibilities. 1.- Computer AC / DC cable is bad not allowing the computer battery to charge.
2.- Battery is bad.
3.- Battery charger board is bad.

Solutions:
1.- Computer AC / DC cable is bad not allowing the computer battery to charge
Verify that the AC and or DC cable is not bad by testing the computer only with the power plug connected and the battery out of the laptop.
2.- Battery is bad
It is possible that if the power plug is good that the computer battery is bad. Leave the computer connected to the power with the battery connected in the computer for at least one hour; if the battery does not charge, consider having the battery and/or the laptop serviced or repaired.
If the computer and/or battery is not in warranty consider just replacing the battery as it is very likely that it is just a bad battery.
3.- Battery charger board is bad
If the battery has been replaced or an alternate battery from an alternate identical laptop does not work in the computer, it is likely that the power or charger board within the laptop is bad. It is recommended that the laptop be serviced or repaired.
