Question about Dell Inspiron 6400 Notebook

1 Answer

Optical Drive My keyboard shortcut to open the optical drive stopped working the day after the warranty expired, that was about two months ago, maybe more. Can you advise if this is a known bug with the Inspiron 6400? Brendan

Thank you for your help. Have thought that it's probably about time to flatten it and rebuild again anyway so that may yet yield my solution.

    Cheers

Why won't my cd drive read and cd's

If you can try using a cleaner CD or even try to use a soft ear bud on the optical unit it can confirm if there was dirt. If not the fault seems relative to a faulty optical unit and if might be better to replace the unit after it is tested once again on another PC. make sure that the drivers were reinstalled.

We have a disk stuch in a dell inspiron 1318, there is no OS on it right now. how can we get disk out? there is no place to stick the paper clip

Remove the optical drive, and then open the drive. Remove the disk.

With most laptops this is a simple job.
Turn the laptop over on it's top, remove one Philips head screw, pull the optical drive out.
Remove 2 to 4 screws from a cover on the optical drive, and ease the tray open.

With the Inspiron 1318 Notebook PC it is more difficult.

A) Remove the Display Assembly.
(Removal covers removing the Display Assembly as a whole unit, off of the laptop)

B) Remove the Keyboard.

C) Remove the Palm Rest. (Top cover under the Keyboard. Your palms rest on it when you use the touchpad)

D) Remove the Optical Drive

I have purchase lenovo Y410 but DVD drive not working since 8 days . Kindly suggest how to resovle this issue Thanks Dinesh

I would 'slap' Windows around, and make it reinstall the drivers for the DVD optical drive.

Vista:

[Note* All clicks are Left-click unless otherwise noted]

1) Click on Start (Windows logo button)

2) Click on Control Panel

3) Click on Device Manager

4) After Device Manager loads all the way, click on the + sign to the left of -
DVD/CD-ROM drives

5) Right-click on the name of the DVD optical drive

6) Click on Uninstall

Windows will come up with a 'squawk box',
"Warning you are about to uninstall this device"

It's okay, click on OK.

Now close all windows, and go back to the desktop screen.
Restart the computer.

When Windows has fully loaded you should get a pop-up out of the system tray,
"Found new hardware device", and perhaps another one will follow,
"Found XXXX optical drive"
(XXXX being the name of the optical drive)

If this doesn't work try cleaning the laser optical eye of the DVD optical drive.

Laptop on open the DVD optical drive tray.
Turn the laptop off.
Remove ALL power to the laptop.
(AC adapter {Charger} and Battery)
Use a can of compressed air for computers.

Or use a disk cleaning device for cleaning CD/DVD optical drives. (Power plugged into the laptop)

Cannot eject disc door will not open

It means the eject botton is not functioning, maybe the botton is not contacting the appropriate function.
Try and open My Computer or Computer from START botton and then right click on the Disc-R to select eject and you will find it open immediately.

Sony Vaio Notebook's blu-Ray optical drive stops during DVD play

The laser is definitely weak on that drive, it takes alot of power to play blu-ray discs and if the laser may have been slightly defective to begin with then that can cause the drive to act funky the way it has been.

Whatever blu-ray drive you get doesn't matter as long as the shape of it is the same as the one you have now cause all you would have to do is change out the front door and the screw holder on the back of the drive, then because the shape of the drive is the same, you can move it back into its slot.

Your notebook is new enough to where any drive will work in it.

DVD/CD Bluray Stopped working

Since you are under warranty, I would suggest not trying to do anything yourself if your not sure of your capabilities. Get somebody tech savy to do either one of those options you mentioned. Remove Hard drive, or bad optical drive. Another solution is just back up all your data on a removable drive, and then you can just reinstall the data back when you get the drive back. Depending on how much data you have it shouldnt take long to get back to your settings. It would be a good idea to start backing up anyway if your concerned about losing data and settings since it is almost inevitable eventually in time.

CD/DVD compartment keeps popping open

Might be a mechanical issue with the drive itself. If you have the tools and the knowledge, you can try removing the optical drive and reseating it in the laptop (should only be held in place by 1, maybe 2 screws on the bottom). If that doesn't solve it, carefully try removing the faceplate and see if there's any debris or foreign substance that may be making contact with the area where the eject button would make contact with the drive, and using a q-tip, or non-conducive plastic object, try and remove the debris or substance gently (if using a q-tip, you can use a dab of rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol). If this still doesn't resolve the issue, then it may be time to replace the optical drive, in which case you can get it replaced through your place of purchase, or through the manufacturer directly. Also, might be worthwhile to check and see if you're covered under warranty through either. If not, optical drives for laptops usually average between $60-90 USD for the part.

CD drive not working

Can you try if the CD/DVD optical drive can boot from a windows cd - if so your problem is probably windows software if not drive optics may need cleaning or it may be necessary to replace the drive. If replacement is necessary it is the fitting of the front bezel - to the same type of drive [usually the same manufacturer] that is critical.
