You just put the food in the microwave and the dish surface heats up as well as the food. Microwave heating work by heating the water molecules in the food. The dish contains a metallic content on the base which heats up. You can also preheat the dish and drop food into it so it starts sizzling straight away.
You can try it but I doubt the results would be good. A microwave oven can cook many foods quite satisfactorily but left many dishes looking anaemic and unappetising which led to the introduction of in-microwave gadgets such as browning dishes which would react with the microwave energy and become hot enough to sear meat.
Adding a grill facility to a microwave means those gadgets are no longer needed and food can appear more appetising by being seared or browned on the top surface while the rest of the food is cooked by the microwave.
When using the grill facility it is necessary to raise the food on a microwave approved trivet - a small lightweight wire construction so it doesn't interfere with the microwave energy and is hardly suitable for balancing a baking tray on.
some microwaves vent to the exterior. check outside for a vent. If it is a recirculating model, perhaps the filters are plugged, the vent pathway is blocked (packaging material) or a loose panel at the back so that the exhaust fan air is leaking out somewhere else. I don't know what else it could be unless the fan is loose on the motor shaft and the fan motor is running but the fan blades are not moving air.
As these dishes were designed by Corning for a 650 watt over, you can recalculate preheat and cooking times for your oven with the following formula:
650/(your oven's wattage) x (listed preheat time or cook time)
For example, for a Corning MW-9 dish, they list 4 minutes maximum preheat time. I have a 1,580 watt oven. So 650/1580 = .41 x 4 minutes = 1.64 minutes and about a minute and a half preheat. (MAX).
The oven may be used purely for microwaving or simply as a grill for
cooking such things as toast. The radiant or quartz grill may be used in
a variety of ways. You can use microwaves that have grill functions to
roast foods, for baking purposes or for grilling food such as bacon or
sausages on the racks. Some models also allow you to use both the oven
and grill together, and you can produce fantastically presented meals by
using the grill to brown off your dish after cooking. The grill will
often have low, medium and high settings for you to choose from, letting
you control how brown your food is. By using a microwave with a grill,
you can prepare great meals or snacks in a fraction of the time that it
would take if you used a conventional oven and grill. Microwaves are particularly convenient, as you don't have to keep checking on the food or stand over it as it cooks.

Hi,
Here is a tip that will help you to figure out what is wrong with your
Microwave Oven....
Sorry this isn't a forum for helping you out with receipes.
A grill means you can use it put cheese on bread (toast eventually) or to give COOKED meat or fish a brownish effect when the grill function has been activated.
