Question about Toshiba 62HM195 62" HDTV

Open Question

Bottom half of screen pixelated

After almost 2 years of trouble free operation, the bottom half of my screen has become all pixelated and flickers.  The upper half of the screen looks perfect.

Have the same problem on a 56hm195 purchased in December 2005. Happened right in front of my eyes while watching Discovery HD.

The TV repair person came and didn't know what it was so he took it.  After a week or more he came to the conclusion after talking with Toshiba that I had a bad light engine.  I ordered the part through them and two weeks later they are telling me it is on Factory Backorder.  That got me going and after several wasted
calls to Toshiba I found several posts regarding Light Engine replacement and plan to cancel my order with the repair place and
get my set back, and order the part from a discount location as describe on this site.  Did you get yours fixed?

I did cancel my order with the local "warranty service center" which is not particularly close.  They returned the set back to me  in the same state which I expected, I was just hoping the screen wasn't damaged sitting in the back of some funky shop for a month.  They had initially charged me $650 for the Light Engine which showed up on my credit card right away even though the part was back ordered and they couldn't give me any idea for how long.  I found the part online at Partstore.com for $450 and they also indicated right away (not after a week) that the part was back ordered and they expected them in by June 5th.  I got an email 2 days ago that the part shipped so I will have it in a couple of days. I plan to try and fix this myself

The light engine arrived as scheduled from Partstore.com.  They are not kidding when they say Light Engine.  The unit is indeed an
engine and unlike many parts that you pay hundreds of dollars for,
it looks like it should cost that much.  I bought and downloaded the service manual for $16.95 which helped a little with some diagrams
that showed the location of the light engine.  A friend came over yesterday to help and we removed the lower back panel which exposed the light engine and electronics and carefully removed the
defective engine and replaced it with the new one.  It helped to
take out the screws holding the rack of circuit boards to the left
of the light engine to pull that assembly partially to get to the connectors where the Light Engine connects to. But all in all, if you are patient, it was not to bad.  The light engine ships with a
lens cover that you must remove but that is pretty obvious when you pull out the old one.  Once reassembled, the HD TV is back working again!

I have the exact same problem with my 56HM195 right now. I plan to replace the light engine thanks to this post.

You probably have faulty lcd panels inside the tv. replacing them can cost alot of money. I assume you have tried different inputs? If the dots are in excactly the same place then the lcd panels or lcd controller are faulty.

SOURCE: Set is 4 years old, although this problem is

Not worth repairing. The Light engine is bad. All DLP sets have this problem and that's why they are no longer being made.

The bottom half of the screen of my old Toshiba rear projection tv is black. It will usually correct itself after about an hour of warm up. What is the problem and how can it be corrected?

Hi ,it has to do with the light engine.Either the DMD board and this it how it works:http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/dlp1.htm Basically if your tv is a dlp it has a chip that carries 2 million pixels when those chips are in the off position you'll get lines or discoloration.God bless you and your family.

Odds are real good that the cooling fluid in the blue picture tube assembly has become contaminated. Only solution is to pull blue crt and dump out old fluid and clean and reinstall new fluid. Once done a fair amount of re-alignment is required. This is not a job for a do-it-yourselfer. Most tv shops would charge in the area of $250 to $300 for this repair.
