unfortunately it is repair issue.. the lens does go out on a track and may have got off track

I have the same problem from 40 yrds out. nikon wants $150 + 12.50 shipping.
instead I bought a bushnell scout 1000. with the $50 rebate it cost $169 with a
2year warranty(till 12/10) . The nikon was 1 month out of warrany.
Its works great.
i will never buy anything nikon again.

I had the same issue with my Nikon Laser 800 rangefinder. I sent it in and they wanted $311.00 to fix it so I bought a new one for $300.00 off EBAY. Today I was missing around with my old rangefinder and noticed after I put the battery in I could hear something loose in the rangefinder. There is a little metal tang in the bottom where the battery goes that holds tension on the battery that was bent down. I bent it back up about 3/16" and put the battery back in, now it works fine.
