Short in Speaker Jack of my laptop

While inserting my external usb keyboard into the jack, it appeared to get stuck and became hard to insert into the usb port. I noticed yesterday that it caused a short in the speakers. I can insert a usb device and the sound intermittently comes in and out (like a short) The part number of the laptop is PR125UA made by HP. Any advice about how I can disassemble it to repair the short?

i dont see how a usb port can actually be related to your sound but maybe the best solution right now is to simply replace your usb port as it might have been damaged by your external usb keyboard

Audio jack seems to have short

Hello,

There is probably a broken solder where the audio jack connects to the mainboard. If you are in warranty, then contact HP and they will fix it free of charge. If not, then pick up a usb sound card. They are cheap ($20), plug into a usb port, and have a speaker and headphone jack. This will fix it.

Joe

After i plugged external speakers into my laptop, the laptops speakers stopped working. I've tried driver updates rollbacks re installs and pretty much everything else i can think of, being a mildly

The laptop speakers should only be cut out when the externals are plugged in. This is done by a little switch inside the jack. If it will not switch back and the external speakers still work fine then I would say that is definitely the problem. There is not much you can do if that is stuck. All the switch really looks like is a strip of metal that is like a spring. When you push the plug in it pushes this to the side and disconnects the internal speakers. The jack is mounted on the main board so you would have to locate the proper one and solder it on or replace the main board. Short of going that far I would see if inserting a jack a few times will get it to spring back. If there has been any spills on the laptop or it is gummed up inside you can use proper electronics connector cleaner. This is risky as it can damage the plastics but doesn't take much at all to work. I would look inside the plug and see if you can see debris or gunk. I'd also try knocking it. This is literally knocking around the switch like you are knocking on a door. You don't want to hit it really hard but just a few short sharp knocks will loosen things up with out causing damage. If you knock like the landlord looking for rent money then it might ;-]

How to replace D620 power jack? pwer jack is "loose" causing intermittent connection with power supply. the problem is "not" power cord.

The power jack is located on the motherboard. It is soldered to it. You have to remove the screws behind the laptop securing the back cover and disconnect the hard drive and GPU cables remove the keyboard so that you can pull out the motherboard. This is necessary since the solder joints are located under the motherboard and the jack is over it. There are 3 pins that are soldered. Remove the solder on all 3 and pull out the jack. Insert the pins of the new jack in the space vacated by the old pins and use a low diameter solder(2mm or less if available and lead free solder only) to solder the pins to the board and voila!

Speakers port not working properly...

It must be a hardware problem it can't be the driver which is software. If I were u i would have had a look inside the pc at the jack or ask toshiba for a repair/replace if in warranty but i think it's more likely the jack ur intrested in.Try putting a drop of water when inserting the jack(don't be affraid nothing can happen) and rotate it a bit and see if it comes only in the external device. This worked for me I hope it did for u.

Can't mute inbuilt speakers

That is not a software problem.
The headphones/external speakers jack socket has a switch to exclude from audio the internal speakers, when a jack plug is connected.
This is a very simple device and is not software controlled.
The fact that it has gone faulty at the same time you reinstalled the system is a coincidence.
If it does not mute when you insert headphones, all you can do is trying to play with the jack plug , inserting and pulling it out. If this does not unlock the switch, the alternative is having the jack socket replaced by a technician. This is generally an expensive repair, asthe socked is soldered on motherboard.
A cheap alternative to a proper repair is using an external USB to Audio Adapter and mute the internal audicard when using headphones.

Compaq C740TU speaker does not deactivates if external speakers are connetced

The internal speakers should automatically be disconnected by inserting a 3.5mm jack plug in the audio out socket. It may be that your headphones or external speakers are using a 2.5mm jack which is too small to operate the switches in the audio out socket. Purchase a 3.5mm jack plug [cheap] and plug this in if it disconnects the laptops internal speakers then you need to connect accesories with the correct size plug.
