Where can I buy nikon sb600 and sb800 spare parts. Need replacement infrared covers.

If you cannot release Standby from within the menu options, here is one thing I did: removed all batteries then pumped the on/off button numerous times. Upon replacing the batteries the issue is solved. If that does not work then it may need to go to Nikon. The SB600 seems to have more issues than the SB800 and up.

The Nikon D80's shutter can be released via handheld "IR" or infrared remote. You can buy them online or in most camera shops. The Nikon branded one will cost the most, but really doesn't perform a whole lot better than the $5 third party versions. The nice thing about IR remotes is that only a transmitter is needed. There's a built in IR receiver on the front of the camera body, and as long as it is not obstructed - or too far from the transmitter, it will work fine.

The SB600 will fire if setup to work correctly when the shutter is released "normally" - triggering with a IR remote will not affect the SB600 flash whether mounted on the camera or if in "commander mode". The D80 manual has details on pg 38 to operate in both the instant and time delayed IR operation modes and should be consulted as Nikon does not allow copy and paste from the manual - and they make use of graphics for button functions.

When distances are too great for the IR remote, you'll need to go the route of an RF or radio frequency remote instead. Many of these will work at distance up to and even beyond 100 yards. They consist of a transmitter and receiver. The receiver can be mounted on the hot shoe of the camera or tethered via cable to the camera body. This is not the question you asked about, so I won't go into further detail - but only mention it as another way of doing the same thing from greater distances or when you can not be in front of the camera to access the IR receiver on the D80 body.

The Sb800 and the Sb900 is compatible . Can you tell me more of what the problem is .
There is no frim ware for the flash . The NIKON SB 900 FLASH SHOE IS THICKER AND MAKES BETTER CONTACT . THE NIKON SB800 SHOE IS LOOSER AND NEEDS TO BE ADJUSTED

This flash was made in the 1990's for use on nikon film cameras. It wont work in TTL mode on current nikon models, and it has no infrared remote capability like the sb600/800 speedlights, but it can still be fired in manual mode by even the newest nikon cameras. I wouldnt throw it away, but I probably wouldnt use it that much either.

For wireless flash you need two things:

1) Something to act as the controller.

2) A remote flash.

While your SB600 will work fine as a remote flash, the D40x does not have the 'built-in' capability to act as the controller (as some of the more expensive models do). Unfortunately, you would need a SU800 or SB800 to act as controller.

The sb600 needs to be able to see the preflashes of the sb800, so this is probably caused by one of two things.  The first thing I'd check is whether or not the light sensor on the side of the sb600 was covered, blocked, or facing away from the sb800.  I've had problems outdoors when I forgot to have the light sensor face the camera.
If the sensor was facing the camera, it is possible that the flashes didn't have a good line of sight to each other.  That normally shouldn't matter, but if there is a high ceiling and lots of people, it could be the case.  I don't know if it will help, but in any case I would recommend using a StoFen Omnibounce on the sb800 to increase the likelihood that the light finds a direction where a surface to bounce off of is found.

I had that same problem with the SB600 and the SB 800. Solutions; get a new one. After about a year of usage the sb600 started giving me that problem. It flashes but it does not sync. It still works as a remote unit, but not mounted on the camera. The SB800 just went to a coma last weekend. No sync at all, not even as remote unit, no strobe function, just a bright flash, when triggering the test button with new fresh batteries, it flashes at max power once and takes around 7 seconds to recycle. No multiple flashes at all. I had to buy a new one.
