Washing Machine Smell and Stopped Working

This is regarding a Whirlpool Ultimate Care II washing machine. After five continuous loads of wash, the washing machine produced a burning rubber smell and then stopped working. After 7 hours, The machine was able to work again in proper working order. Is this because it was overworked? The motor could have possibly overheated? Please provide me with a more probable answer, it would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you.

Thank you aborcass. I thought so too. The same thing happened when the freezer door was left open one day. After about 10 minutes, the whole fridge shut off and had to reset it from the button in the back.

Was washing a big heavy blanket when I smelled something burning - almost burnt rubber smell. Went to shut it down and noticed it was already dead. Researched for hours, then plugged it in and it works fine. I will be unplugging it when not in use and watching carefully over the next few loads.

We have a new Whirlpool top loading washer, nothing fancy - it was about $350. I've done a bunch of loads using the low agitation cycle with no problem but this morning used the two-speed "Casual" cycle for the first time and it started to give off a burned smell. Water level was OK but I added more anyway and switched it back to low agitation. It is going fine, but this is not a good start! Can you tell me more about the two-speed problem, and how to tell if it is an electrical contact vs a belt problem? (We have the manufacturer's warranty only.) Thanks much

GE Washer WPSF4170V0WW - Half HP 2-speed motor runs for 10 seconds or so, then cuts out - on all cycles, agitate and spin. Seems that its a thermal overload issue. Is the motor shot?

When lid closes the machine doesn't start. You have to bang on it for it to start. Is it the lid switch??

Thatss what it sounds like to me the motor simply turned off on overload( giving that electrical, almost burnt rubber smell.) either that or it was overloaded as well as overworked. i wouldnt see any reason for concern, unless was happenig on regular basis

THERE IS ONLY ONE DEVICE ON A TOP LOAD WASHER THAT WILL SHUT DOWN THE MACHINE AND THEN RESET LATER. THE MOTOR HAS AN OVERLOAD ON IT THAT WILL TRIP IF THE MOTOR GETS TOO HOT OR PULLS TOO MUCH CURRENT. IT SOUNDS LIKE IT GOT TOO HOT FOR SOME REASON. IF THE MACHINE WAS OVERLOADED ON EACH WASH LOAD, IT COULD CAUSE OVERHEATING OF THE MOTOR.
ANOTHER CAUSE WOULD BE IF THE MOTOR IS A TWO OR THREE SPEED MOTOR, AND THE TIMER OR SPEED SWITCH FUSES CONTACTS TOGETHER, IT COULD CAUSE TOO MUCH CURRENT TO RUN THROUGH THE MOTOR OVER HEATING IT.
I WOULD JUST MONITOR IT AND SEE IF IT GOES AHEAD AND WORKS O.K. THE OVERLOAD WILL KEEP IT FROM BECOMING DANGEROUSLY HOT.

Spin does has stopped working. all the functions work normally but the washer has stopped spinning.

The lid switch may be defective. If it is, the washing machine doesn't spin. The switch is inside the washing machine main housing near the door frame. Often you have to raise or open the top or front of the washing machine to get to the switch. If it's defective, you need to replace it. Here is a link to the part you will need.

My Whirlpool washer (Ultimate Care II) stops at

This is probally the lid switch. You can check this by checking for continuity. You should have none with switch open and some continuity when switch is closed if yours has continuity when opened you will need to replace. There is a video at www.appliancehelponline.com/servicemanual.html that can walk you thru the replacement.

Washing machine will not cycle

I have a Whirlpool Ultimate Care II. My washing machine would not cycle once it filled with water. I purchased a lid switch from partselect.com. The installation took five minutes. This corrected the problem. I hope this helps.

Top Loading whirlpool washing machine.

Could be the top lid switch. If the timer has stopped moving (you can no longer hear it clicking along) good chance that's what it is. When it has stopped try pushing hard down on the top of the lid AND/OR put a piece of plastic (or something ) into the lid latch switch... See if it continues on with the wash cycle...

Mine just went bad this week. Bought the part for $25...

Washer stopped working

If after waiting for a while it still does not respond - most likely the motor is burnt - especially if those were all very heavy loads
