Bad run capacitor or bad compressor. If you hear an occasional click from the compressor try a new run cap and then a hard start kit. Otherwise it's more economical to purchase a new unit.

Unit cools great but when extremly hot weather occurs it eventually freezes up.

dirty filters in the indoor unit.As the ambient temperature rises the unit will work harder and longer, its fine when its just a normal day because the evaporator coil wont have time to ice up as the compressor will cycle off before the coil freezes totally, but during extreme ambient temperatures the coil will ice up as the compressor will continue running to reach set-point causing the coil to ice up

Rooftop RV Air Conditioner: temp outside 90 or above. compressor kicks off ....

It sounds like maybe an overload for the compressor is tripping and resetting once the compressor cools. Possibly due to a low charge.

Water cooled packaged system has a psi reading of 75 when the compressor is off. when it kicks on the psi goes to 115. On another unit the reading is 65psi with the compressor off and 105psi when it kicks...

The gauge could be slightly out of calibration. With the compressor off, and both units exposed to nearly the same temperature of air & water, the pressures will be virtually the same, even if the one system has slightly more refrigerant than the other. Again, this is assuming the units have the same type of refrigerant and are exposed to the same air and water temps.
I advise leaving the refrigerant alone (especially if you are not EPA certified) and start with ensuring you have a clean air filter, clean coils, proper air flowing across the air coil and proper water flow flowing across the water coil.

I'm going to share a trick.........a refrigerant tank with either a slight amount of liquid or a lot of liquid, can be identified by comparing the saturated liquid temperature (using a Pressure/Temperature chart) and the ambient temperature of the air which the tank is stored. Your ac, though it has lines, coils, etc, is a sealed system with saturated liquid and gas. That said, as long as they are exposed to the same ambient temperatures, the pressures (without the compressor running ie: OFF) will be equal. One of the two gauges is off 10psig.

Without being onsite with toolbox in hand, I hope this information is very helpful to you moving forward. :-)

Does not heat real hot or cool real cold . dometic duotherm penguin markings on 85 or so unit

Heat real hot? Is this a heat pump or do you have a heat strip installed. Get a regular thermometer and put it in the outgoing vents of the unit. Register the temperature there and then the outside temp. If it is cooling at 17 to 23 degrees below ambient temperature, the manufacturer says this is fine. Try cleaning the condenser out on the top of the rv. Gently hose the rear condenser out until all the dirt and grime is removed the unit. Try cooling again and see if it is better.

Air compressor does not kick in unless ambient temp is > 80

Do not operate low fan and maximum temperature as the coils will freeze up stopping air flow.

AC/Heatpump units cycle numerous times blowing ambient air.

If the compressor never kicks in, I would check the start capacitor, thermostat and the compressor windings. Most times the start capacitor is defective. Some window air conditioners the fan will run while the compressor stop through the thermostat switch. If the thermostat switch is bad every thing runs except the compressor. Let me know, Thanks, Sea Breeze

Coleman rooftop unit ac only.

These units should run in higher ambient conditions within limits. If your unit shuts down with an ambient temperature of 95°F there is a possibility that the system may have a slight over charge of refrigerant in the system or a slight undercharge. This can be easily checked under running conditions by checking the superheat of the gases returning to the compressor. You may also want to check the current draw and the voltage supply during these conditions that are causing the system shut down.

Is your condensing unit located in a well ventilated area and have an ample space, atleast a foot, from the rooftop flooring? Just make a check that free flowing outside air properly ventilates the condensing unit specially on high ambient temperatures. Hope this would solve your problem

Duo Therm AC not working

If unit was freezing up the air flow would normally stop, until the unit is turned off and allowed to thaw. I suspect evaporator blower may have a worn out belt, or compressor is shutting off due to control or internal overheat. What is the age of the unit?
