Had same problem. Removed kick panel at bottom and found the wires from the freezer door near the lower hinge are very flimsy. The white wire was broken at the connector and the connector was corroded. Since I have no plans to remove the freezer door, I spliced the wires together with **** connectors and it's working fine. GE could do better.
Your refrig display , has lost communication , with the main control board , located , behind the refrig , behind an 8 " X 10 " panel . The control board , is easily replaceable , with 7 or 8 plugs , attached to it . The part number , for your board , is WR55X10942 . It runs about $150.00 .
remove front grill then disconnect the water line at the quick connector. Place line on right side into container and push lever for water. If no water flows the problem is a solenoid on the left side of the back of refrig behind lower panel. If water flows into container the problem is related to freezing of the water line in the freezer door. GE fix is a $500 plus door replacement. Thaw from back of door behind the dispenser with hair dryer (do not get plastic too hot). Cheap fix is to insulate back of door with insulation such as a foam sleeping bag mat or the foil and bubble wrap type of ducy insulation
there is a board in the back right side behind a panel embedded in the back of the unit just above the back cover. it is a Part # WR55x10552 this is most likely your problem it controls all functions of the unit
