Sony Bravia LCD 40" XBR2- Sound, but no picture; solid bright green screen

I have had my Sony LCD Flatscreen for barely over a year now (didn't get the extended warranty because I figured...this much for a t.v., it should last at least 5 years) now I'm screwed. I tried to turn it on the other day and there was no picture. I immediately thought it was my satellite system, but it wasn't. I just tried to turn on the t.v. without anything else and the menu wouldn't even come up. After a couple of minutes the blank black screen that it shows at first turns to a solid bright green.

If the satellite or anything else is on you can hear the sound, but the picture will not display. I called Sony and they guided me through some troubleshooting tips, but nothing worked. They said it would have to be repaired.

After looking on this site for a while I have seen similar problems, but couldn't find an exact issue with this t.v. I'm guessing the lamp is bad and needs to be replaced.

Does this sound like the lamp? And if so, where would it be located and how can I replace it?

Thanks in advance!

Christian

    The model number is KDL-40XBR2

Yes, our Sony Bravia started doing exactly what you described.  I will switch to a channel (usually when I try and watch something I've recorded on the Cable Box DVR), and the screen will go totally bright green.  When I try and switch channels, it will go back to the regular picture for one second, then settle on the new channel and show the bright green screen.

I have a Sony Bravia KDL-40S2000. Same thing. Started going black when playing back shows recorded on high def or if swiching from high def channels to regular channels. If turned off and back on, picture came back. Now the picture is just completely gone. Can hear sound and can tell channels are changing but screen is completely blue. Nothing comes up on menu or anything. Do you know what it is and how much it would cost to fix.

no picture, only sound. It happens when we were watching TV, children's chanel and the picture just disapeared. Even the meny can not be shown. Only dark screen. Not green either. I bought Sony because I think the quality may be good, though it was more expensive than other brands when I bought it. But only 10 months after, this happens. I can only wish that it can be repaired. Goddam Japanese products!

Bought the 52" LCD Bravia KDL-52W4100 on 9/12/08 and on 10/4 the screen when bright green. Can get audio from any source (Cable/Blue Ray, etc.) but no picture.

I have a Sony Bravia KDL46V2500. It is 9 months old. On any random day, the picture goes out, but I have sound. This has been going on for 4 months, The menu won't show up because there is no picture. I have called sony 2 times on it, and they can not help, they assigned me a case number and told me to call the local contracted repair technician.  I am calling for service today. I hope I can resolve this mystery. It is so frustrating, and it makes me so angry because I paid $1800.00 for a faulty TV.

    Hi,

I'm sitting here with my wife, we just set up our brand new Sony Bravia 40" KDL-40S4100, and I go to turn it on for the first time (YES, the FIRST time, just pulled it out of the box from Circuit City) and there's no picture. Blank screen. This is irritating, and it seems everyone has had this problem. Super stoked to have what I thought was superior equipment not work. Anyone have any suggestions, please let me know. Bummed. My email is [email protected]

    Thanks!

We just bought our sony bravia KDL46Z4100 and hooked it up last night. When it came on there was just a blue screen with sound and then 15 seconds later it went black and the red standby button was flashing. I called Sony and they asked how many times it flashes, 14 times I told them. They told me it would need service but couldn't tell me why. Does anyone have this problem or know why? We would like to take it back to Circuit City but they are not being very helpful.

hi i have a sony bravia and the picture goon but i have sound can any one help me the model number is kdL-32L40xx

  • Anonymous May 24, 2009

I have a Sony KLV-32S200A and I have been getting the same problem for the better part of a year now. Usually what I do is I just remove the power cord and put it back in nice and firm after a few minutes. A couple of tries usually does the trick. It's probably just a temporary solution, but maybe it helps.

It is possible that the lamp is bad, but do not do anything other than post the exact model number here. With that, I can get you directions on what and how to repair the set hopefully. The model number should start with K.
Thanks,
Dan

Happened twice to me.

1) First time I was too busy and left the thing alone for a few months. Then it worked again fine one day. That was less than 6 months after I got it new.

2) Second time was two weeks ago. Had to go on a camp for 2 days so I unplugged it (because the auto timer to turn it on was still working even though there was no picture, the sound was fine)
Now it is working fine again.

Solution: Unplug it and leave it to rest for 2 days and see if that works.

From what I have read online, it seems to be a power issue. Some people spent money changing parts but in my case, it just seems to need some rest. Even though I don't use it a lot...

I had blank picture on My 40 inch bravia, Lights were okay and sound okay. I found a local business who has savaged TV's and they replaced my Sony Video Driver for 75 pounds. Find an LCD technican and they will save you hundreds.

Hey, I'm green mad from the Oct. 8 posting. The two Sony phone agents were worthless, the gave me several repair services to call. The one I did call was very honest, Said it was the light engine that needed to be replaced. A $1500 part. Since my set wasn't even 30 days old they told me to take it back to Circuit City and get a new one. I LOVE Circuit City. Their policies are very fair and competitive. Bought the Samsung to replace the Sony because I was paranoid, but immediately noticed many differences in quality, SOUND, FUNCTION, . . Samsung's picture is bright but Sony's can be adjusted to match. Kept it for two weeks to see if I'd get used to it, but couldn't. Circuit City let me exchange it back for the Sony model I had purchased before Bravie KDL524100W. It's only been two weeks, but I love this television and hope the green screen doesn't return. Did buy the Circuity City warranty, because read alot about Sony's warranty replacing with remanufactured parts after long periods of not having a TV. Only hope Circuit City will be around for a while.

I have had my Bravia for about a year now and i turned it on today to find that there was no picture, no sound, no menu or back light... just a black screen. Like the first post im not covered under any warranty. I could have paid $100s less for other brands but thought naw.. sony is the best of the best right! $1,200 for a piece of junk to hang on my wall and look nice.

P.S. My Westinghouse is still working fine and was bought the year before.

Sorry about your issue, however, LCD's do not have a lamp, they have a back light but the chances that is bad is a million to one. I strongly recommend taking it in for an evaluation. I understand your feelings that it should last 5 years or so, however I see every brand, a year or two old with these types of issues. The day's of no problems for 5 yrs up to 20 are definitely over. This is technology at it's finest.

Sony bravia kdl52xbr2 problem

hi,hoping that the cable connections are right(check the cable connections once again)..... Sounds like you may have a problem with the video driver boards? I would call up the store where you bought it and ask for a new set or service on this one.
More than likely this is a bad display (lcd screen) the drivers in the lcd display have some problem...... the tv is just a month old so you are still under the warranty period....... just contact the sony outluet where you purchased or the manufacturer for servicing of tv

That sounds like you require a new/replacement screen.
Check your date of purchase with a warranty repair in mind.
Do it quickly as it may still be covered.

Bulbs keep burning out

I would try a genuine sony replacement lamp. There are some reputable sellers on ebay selling them for a couple hundred dollars...Oh also, you say your TV is under warranty?

If it is under Sony's factory 1 year warranty, I would call them direct. If your on some sort of extended warranty plan, through a 3rd party company, tell them you want the genuine sony bulb. Put up a fight, and if that doesnt work, read the fine print for your 3rd party warranty. My extended 3rd party warranty states that if the TV fails 3 times during the extended warranty period, they will replace it with a new one as per their "Lemon" policy.
