Well, not sure if I have a solution. What I did has worked so far. It seemed to me the problem had to be a battery connector because my camera did this when the batteries got low. Then it got to doing it all the time. So I removed the back of the camera, cleaned it and took off and re-installed the battery door. First remove the batteries and the card. There are 8 screws, two on each side. The side with the card, you will have to open the card door to get to those two screws. Be sure to keep the screws separate because they are different sizes. Once the screws are removed, you can take off the back. Be care because there is a ribbon and a wire going from the camera board to the LCD on the back. Mine came off rather easily. I also removed the battery door. We stopped tearing apart at this time because I don't have the correct tools and really don't know what I was doing. We took a can of pressurized air and cleaned out the inside behind the board and around the battery connections. We put the camera back together. I haven't had any problems since and it has been about a week and I have been checking the working operation since. I think it has more to do with the battery door than the actual cleaning of the inside. While you have it open, you might as well clean it.

Try using regular batteries. I did with my camera and seems I can go a lot longer on the regular batteries verses the re-chargable ones

Olympus sp 500UZ digital camera: the camera eats batteries.

Yes. Like all rechargeable batteries they don't last forever and four years is longer than I'd expect.

Replace them with new batteries. You need a 3v lithium ion CR-V3 and if you're in the UK I highly recommend buying them from the Small Battery Company, but they are widely available. Avoid generic "no-name" brands as good quality examples are not very expensive.

I've been using Olympus 550 UZ camera for over a year now. I am facing problem with the life of battery though. Tried Energizer and Duracel batteries. 10-15photos and the battery is drained down. Is there...

Switch from alkaline batteries to pre-charged Nickel Metal-hydride (NiMH).
My best experience is with these batteries:
#1. RayoVac (pre-charged)
#2. Kodak (pre-charged)
#3 Energizer (rechargeable)

Find them at WalMart or online

"pre-charged" are new technology rechargeable batteries. They are GREAT! They outlast alkaline at least 15 times per charge.

Constant blue/purple screen on Olympus SP-500uz

The problem you are describing is a problem with one of the chips in the camera that controls image processing. It seems to have failed and needs to be replaced. Following are the instructions to send your camera to Olympus for service.
http://olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/cpg_servicerepair.asp

Olympus will charge a flat rate repair fee for this product if beyond the one year factory warranty or the warranty is voided. The cost is $151 plus your local sales tax. This covers parts and labor, factory cleaning and diagnostic check, 6 month warranty and the cost of shipping the product back to you is all included in that price.

Olympus 550 UZ battery

you may want to use lithium batteries... i find the rechargeables in most cameras to not last as long... also you may need to clean the contacts in the battery compartment with alcohol and let air dry

Lcd screen

That is an effect that can be had by internal software in the camera, like my Sony. Just get in there and turn off "negative" Youll probably see Sepia, solarize, B/W and negative as other choices.
