Water Valve Problems

I am having intermittent problems with my Kenmore Elite H3 washer. Even though I choose cold water, the system seems to select the hot water valve to open. Then at times, the hot water valve does not close and water continues to run. I'm not sure how to tell if this is a computer problem or a valve problem. I don't want to necessarily have to replace all the parts.

This washer doesn't have a timer dial. It's a computer card with push button selection.

The difficulty occurs when the machine is running. After I hit "pause" which normally shuts things off, the valve sticks open. I also have problems with the washer choosing HOT water when I select cold, again on the push pad.

That tells me nothing other than oter people have the same problem.

Did you read my question???? I asked if it was a valve problem or the computer board! If I knew it was the valve I WOULD change it but I don't want to waste a bunch of money. Plus, if the washer is selecting HOT water when I choose COLD, how is changing the valve going to help???

  • Scarman Apr 04, 2008

The washer is a Kenmore Elite H3. When I select Cold water, it starts to fill with cold then switches to hot. It also sometimes does not shut off the hot water inflow causing an overfill.

I think you are on the right track, it does not make sense for the valve to be the problem as it is opening and closing on command. It's just not getting the right commands at the right times. The wires for the cold and hot valves do not cross and cannot get crossed unless the controller is getting confused.

My money is on the control board which is probably fairly easily replaceable. I'll try to find a part number and maybe a webstore that sells it.

Could you also try to look on the machine for a more specific model number? Look on the back on a tag.

I agree with the valve being at fault, as it controls the flow of both the hot and cold water and the combination of them for warm water. It is almost certain that it is a faulty/sticking valve. IMHO

Once the valve is removed, you may find debris that is inhibiting it, and a cleaning of the valve may solve your issue.

Hi,

Please read the below steps carefully it will help you fix the problem.

Overflowing Machine
* Turn machine off, with timer dial in off position, make sure you have stopped the flow of water into the machine.
* If the water continues to run, after the above steps, then the mixing valve is stuck open.
* The water should be, at this point, turned off using the shut off valve at the back, on the wall, or may be located by the washing sink. Turning the valves clockwise will turn the water off. If all else fails and you cannot find these valves, turn the water off at the main shut-off in your home.
* Turn the timer dial to the spin cycle to empty the machine; leaving the water turned off. If the machine will not empty using the spin cycle, this is a signal that the pump or belt needs repair and it is time to call a technician.
* If the machine has emptied from the tub, then turn the machine off. Turn the water back on. If water starts to run into the tub before you have turned it on, with the switch, it is a sign that the mixing valve is not working.
* If water does not run until the switch is turned on to the cycle to fill the machine, then it appears that the water level switch is faulty.
* You may be able to un-stick the mixing valve by turning the machine off and on several times using the timer dial. The valve may stick again at any time, so use caution, by watching the machine to make sure it turns water source off at fill level. The "fix" is usually only short-lived.

Goodluck,
Please don't forget to rate the solution.

The valve will only open or close when it receives the commands from the control board.

I would say that the main control board has an intermittent failure if it works sometimes.

Check this site for the correct parts for your appliance.

from what you said it sounds like you have a problem with cold water coming into the machine, shut off the house water valve, remove the water lines off the back of the washer and mark them so you'll know where the connect when you put them back onto the washer, stick them in a backet or in the tub of the washer, turn the water on,if the water comes out strong then you have a problem with the water valve on the washer, see if you can pull out the screens out of the valve and clean them but most likely you'll need to replace the valve.if the water doesn't come out strong then you have a problem with the house water

No matter what the temp setting is at it only has very hot water

Your water temp is determined by 2 things. First the hook up to your water supply. If you are able to turn off the hot water valve that feeds the unit and then select a cold water only wash, do you get cold water?? If not then someone hooked up the hoses to 2 hot water feeds. If hot and cold feeds are installed right, the second thing is your computer which monitors the incoming temp through the boards atc control and a thermister. If you select cold, and only get a hum and the cold water valve is on, you may have to clean the screens in the valve of any sediment. If no hum, and no cold, dead solenoid on valve, but that would throw an error code usually. All fills are monitored by the board and usually begin with a hot/wrm mix and then changeover to a monitored cold temp , about 70 degrees.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/getModel!retrieve.pd?modelNumber=110.23032101&pathTaken=partSearch

and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

Also see the Whirlpool / Kenmore Service Manual for these washers.

The most likely culprits are the Water Level or Water Temperature switches.

The Service Manual has procedures for testing each of them.

Kenmore Top Loading washer gets very little cold water

You could try reversing the water lines and see when you select hot if cold comes out strong. If it does not then it should be the valve. If it comes out good in reverse, it could be the tempature sensor. Here is the link to parts and diagrams.

Kenmore Elite washing machine will not fill as fast as usual.

You will need to get behind the washer, turn the water off, disconnect the hose from the washer, look for a screen inside the water valve, hopefully there is one that you can clean if necessary. I always put the hose over in the washer and turn the water on to check the flow.

If the screens on both hot and cold are clear, water flow is good on both hot and cold, connect the water back to the washer. If the flow is still slow then the problem is inside the valve. The valve will have to be replaced.

Kenmore h3 Elite Hot/Cold Water problems

I wouldn't imagine it being a computer problem, computers don't make mistakes like that. I would start with the inlet valve http://www.partselect.com/xq/aspx/Inventory.391478/qx/PartDetail.htm?SourceCode=7&ModelNum=110.44832202 and maybe the inlet valve wiring harness http://www.partselect.com/xq/aspx/Inventory.391563/qx/PartDetail.htm?SourceCode=7&ModelNum=110.44832202 for good measure. Both parts together will run you less than $100 and shouldn't be that difficult to replace. I'm am no Washing Machine expert, I just go by my common sense and Google. The computer http://www.partselect.com/xq/aspx/Inventory.971890/qx/PartDetail.htm?SourceCode=7&ModelNum=110.44832202 is $250+ and like I said I don't think the computer would cause the valve to open slowly and stay open, sounds like the vavle is sticking. Good Luck!
