Trying to program a universal controler so that I can use the vcr hooked up to cable and change channels.

Most remotes of that type have a "Code Search" feature, and it's the easiest way to find the code. You would put the remote in search mode (follwoing the manual instructions) and run through the codes 1 at a time, if you see the Unit turn off, you store the code.
