Question about Intel Motherboard

1 Answer

Cpu overclocking I have a amd 64bit socket 939 3000+ cpu and want to overclock it to play games abit better. When I load files or movies I can see my cpu running at 100% for a long time. I always clear my cache memory and removed a lot of startup programs but I think overclocking is my only option. Money is thight so I can't afford to buy a new cpu or pc. Please help to tell me what to do or what software to run. Regards Steve

Try this. press ctrl-alt-delete to view your task manager. Click the processes tab. From the list of items, look at CPU and Mem Usage to see what all is running.

System failed due to cpu overclocking. Not setup for overclocking in the bios.

Reboot, and enter BIOS SETUP mode.
Choose "Load Default Settings".
This will "undo" any overclocking of your motherboard and of your CPU.

Im trying to decide what video card to get with this mother im a huge gamer and i play all games from CoD4 to wow. also does this board already come factory overclocked? how do i configure overclocking ?

motherboards do not come overclocked, unless you bought it from a person that has already done that. For overclocking, you go into the BIOS but make sure you have adequate cooling in your machine. When you overclock you want the CPU cooler fan to blow away from the CPU instead of onto it. Also you want more fans blowing out the rear of the case if you have one intake fan in the front, two in the rear/side panel. Overclocking causes more heat, and shortens CPU lifetime. I believe you press F2 at boot to get into BIOS on your motherboard. in the BIOS settings you can change the multiplier, but if it doesn't add up correctly, your computer will just hang instead of boot and try a different setting. Although this mobo supports Hyper-Threading and supports Untied Overclocking Technology, so it should be simpler to overclock rather than some mobos are tricky to get it going right.

As for the graphics card with this board: it's an Intel processor so you need a graphics card made by ATI. I would recommend a Radeon graphics card with this motherboard. The motherboard is compatible with Front Side Bus 1600/1333MHz CPUs, so make sure your Graphics card you select doesn't have a FSB faster than that, otherwise you will be wasting money.

Overclocking

Overclocking is set from the BIOS configuration. Not all BIOS allows overclocking, it may need a BIOS upgrade.
Check the ASUS WEB site for your model motherboard.
Overclocking the CPU (ie running at a higher clock speed) and increasing Frontside bus speed will give better performance BUT there is a downside too, if you overclock too high you could overheat the CPU and it could fail.

My suggestion is to never overclock. This makes the machine burn hotter and kills the life of the cpu. I learned this the hard way. If your gaming save up the money and go to the motherboard site and upgrade to a better cpu with fan.

Max. AMD for Asus A7N8X-X

Find the manual online.  Also, your question is foolish in light of the much better efficiency of new multi-core systems and general inavailability of AMD Athlon XP 3200+ in socket-7 form; it's not like you'd save money changing CPUs, or your system would merely fake it for a few days if you put in an XP 3200+ (in the socket that fits!) you had set aside, and it did work.  On the other hand, XP2600+ overclock pretty well.

Overclocking

try in the bios first. it will be under something like 'cpu pnp options' then select overclocking, ENABLE. then under it it may have something like a bus frequency setting. it should be at the stock setting. to overclock, set the # higher. hope that helps you, cause that's what i did. BE SURE TO HAVE ENOUGH COOLING FIRST!!!

download speedfan to check the cpu temperature. (Free)

Motherboard suggestion

If you are looking for the best socket 939 motherboard then its the DFI lanpaty ultra d that you want :)

Hard to find new now but plenty on ebay. Great boards for features and fantastic overclocking potential.

If its a socket 754 cpu you have i think they also did a similiar version for that platform too.
