May be a virus or spyware.

Have you run an antivirus scan lately?

Download Spybot Search and Destroy:

And scan your computer.

Here's a free antivirus if you don't have one:

You must be referring to Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1). It should be available to you by way of Windows Update.

    If not check here.

You are limited to 2 processors, I don't know which you have, see the specs: http://shop.lenovo.com/ISS_Static/WW/AG/merchandising/US/PDFs/valueline_desktops_techspecs_062509.pdf Depending on your OS, Windows Vista, right? Is it 32 or 64 bit? If 32 you can add up to 4Gb's of Memory, it will only use 3.80GB's or so, with 64bit you can add more. Perhaps your Computer needs a Clean up. yeah your system doesnt meet system requirement for running windows Vista Premium. Minimum memory required is 1GB.
Another system requirement is 128memory of graphic card with DirectX 9.0 capable and WDDM 1.0 driver support.
so if you dont have graphic card system will take amount of RAM..this why computer became slow.
If you have 'other components' you can take the RAM not HDD then install it..just make sure the RAM is supported by your current system..
I just recomend that would be better using Windows XP, with less RAM required..

P.S : see here for more detail about windows Vista.

Running ubuntu on (old!) hp e-pc 42; need Windows. Would it be worthwhile installing Vista? How about 7? Thanks.

Based on the specs of your computer I don't recommend that you upgrade to either one of those. You would not want to use Vista because it would run really slow on your computer, and Vista itself is not very good. And if you can't run Vista, you most likely can't run Windows 7 because it requires even more than Vista.

I recommend that you use Windows XP, not only because aside from Windows 7 and Snow Leopard it is my favorite Operating System, it is also the OS that was originally shipped with that specific model computer.

Short answer: Go with Windows XP

Hope this helps!

HP Pavilion M9350F PC running Vista requires a defrag at least once per week or it slows down to a crawl

Sounds like you have a driver on your computer that is not compatible with vista. Lose that OS and go back to XP or load up Windows 7, works like a charm.
