My whirlpool compact 123-00 is not vented is this against code and dangerous?

Dangerous, yes because it will put lint (flammable) into whatever area it is 'venting' into causing a hazard. Some people will buy a filter to attach the end of the dryer duct that will catch the lint. That stops the fire hazard but venting 'dryer' air into the living area is not (in my opinion) smart. You will still have small particles of lint escaping that the lint filter misses which will end up in you home and quite possibly in your lungs...no a good thing. :( Dryer vent needs to be vented outside.

Dryer will produce heat but will not dry clothes

Greetings,
several things to check...i usually pull the vent off of dryer and run load of cloths..if it drys ok...we know the vent was the issue..if its vented to the roof..the screen usually gets stopped up inside the hood. if it still doe's not dry with the vent off. there has to be an air circulation problem.. Check the blower wheel fitting tight enough...they come loose, but normally have noise along with it...

Is it ok to use fabric softener sheets with the

Use the liquid. The sheets will clog up any exhaust pipe or other parts in the dryer. If you live where you vent through the roof, definitely don't use the fabric sheets.

Clothes not drying, lint in dryer

Is the vent 4 inches all the way out? The recommended run length of 10 feet is max, however not very practical or followed. You need a vent brush to run completely through the full length and get as clean as possible. The water is from condensation caused by the long run through the attic. Any kinks in the vent will exacerbate your problem. If you do not like the dryer being 4-6 inches from the wall for the elbow, there is a kit available at most home centers, Lowes, Home Depot, that gives you the same volumn as the 4 inch round in 2 inch flat.

Dryer is not drying clothes

chances are not na problem with dryer, runs for a bout a min and shuts off sounds normal for an empty dryer, the problem is probably where the exhaust leaves the roof, .roof vents have installed from factory a screen to prevent things from entering when not in use. problem is that screen clogs with moist lint and prevents proper air flow. go up and check that vent remove screen you should be fine
