Question about Tascam FW-1804 Sound Card

FW-1804 sounds keeps skipping and cutting out!

I have my fw1804 drivers installed my desktop with XP pro with no issues at all it runs very well indeed... but I got a laptop with Vista 32bit version on and downloads the drivers from there site at:;9,14,45,19.html

which has the lastest version 1.60 which states is for Vista. I can get sound out of my card but it either stops for a few seconds or skips when playing in cubase or even software such as winamp. I've tried everthing installed the old drivers 1.40 (even tho these drivers say it doesn't work on vista it does just has a popup once installed saying its not compatible) then re- intsalling version 1.60 again, run the firmware updates. I have changed the settings of the buffers and in cubase and on the sound card setting to every single comibation of settings :s as you would expect this to be caused by needing a higher buffer latency. which my card you can change from 32- 2048. I've altered the disk buffers. The one thing i can only think of now is that my Laptop has a 4pin firewire input and the PC with XP has a 6pin firewire input and the sound card is also 6pin. So is there a chance that the sync issue is caused by the 4 - 6 pin cable and i therefore should get a 6pin card for my laptop OR has tascam made a balls of the new vista drivers????

I have a Laptop that has a 4 pin and bought the FW-1804 it would keep both lights on, I worked on it for a week till I finally found out it needed Power which is the 6 pin version Firewire. Then I still couldn't get it to work when I bought a PCI Express FW card, until I tried a Bytec PCI Express Card ( The only card I could find that still is available that has the Texas Instrument Chip in it ) I think Tiger Has them. This is what Tascam finally told me I needed to do. It works fine no dropout or hiccups . I have recently put my FW_1894 on a Quad Desktop that is Giving me in and out sound. Is it a chipset problem anybody know?

This is not a solution, but I can claify one thing... the extra 2 pins on a 6 pin firewire are for the 12 volt power supply.... if you're using the 1804 (or any firewire interface) with a 4 pin laptop connection, you need to use an ac adaptor to power the unit... other than that all the connections are the same.

Now, all that being said, My 1804 is dropping out too... it's not freezing the computer or even the daw, but the playback head stops, audio stops and midi notes are gathered like mouse/keystrokes when a system is busy... as soon as the playhead starts again, all the midi notes I played during the freeze play at once.

I updated the chipset drivers on my toshiba a-100 and i updated both the firmware and drivers for the fw1804. Still hanging the playback.

I've tried multiple times to set up the 1804 with my mac far no go...the computer hasn't been recognizing the unit. I've installed, uninstalled, reinstalled a few times, made sure I had the right 6 pin fw cable, plugged it in when prompted, and still, the control box of the 1804 states there is no available device. I did downloaded the most current version. Before I go through this process again, do you have any advice on some more possible kinks?

It is running very VERY VERY slow. I thought reinstalling windows xp and drivers may solve problem but did not. I booted the system from C drive with windows xp pro in he system. It formats the hard drive,...

You may want to check the hard drive - sounds like it may be starting to fail. When it reaches the point of not continuing does it start to click? If you hear clicking then the drive is having issues and its time for a new one.

Hi, The firewire connection on my tascam fw-1804 has suddenly stopped working. I have tried replacing the cable and re-installing the drivers and still haver the problem. Can anyone help please? I'm...

First thing I would look into is the machine that has the other firewire port. Many machines use firewire ports that do not work well at all with professional audio interfaces. I had to replace my firewire card with a better one on a brand new machine to get my software to work correctly.
You might try rebooting the host machine and checking its firewire ports.
Hope this helps.

My firewire suddenly stopped working!!!

I had the same problem after re-installing windows. The firewire just didnt work on the tascam interface. I managed to solve the problem by upgrading from windows xp to windows vista. I downloaded the vista drivers from the tascam site and everything sprang back into action. Problem solved! Hope this helps.

I have a Tascam 1804, and i've had the same problem. Mostly with Latency issues. For me, replacing the firewire chord with a gold plated one worked. PLUS, remember that the firewire connection is technically considered a NETWORK connection which is modified by whatever controls your network activity (ie. Firewall, Anti-Virus). Whenever i start to use my Tascam, i make sure I disable my WiFi and other Internet/network related items so they dont cross interfere with activity in my firewire port. hope this helps.
