Question about Tascam FW-1804 Sound Card
I have my fw1804 drivers installed my desktop with XP pro with no issues at all it runs very well indeed... but I got a laptop with Vista 32bit version on and downloads the drivers from there site at:
which has the lastest version 1.60 which states is for Vista. I can get sound out of my card but it either stops for a few seconds or skips when playing in cubase or even software such as winamp. I've tried everthing installed the old drivers 1.40 (even tho these drivers say it doesn't work on vista it does just has a popup once installed saying its not compatible) then re- intsalling version 1.60 again, run the firmware updates. I have changed the settings of the buffers and in cubase and on the sound card setting to every single comibation of settings :s as you would expect this to be caused by needing a higher buffer latency. which my card you can change from 32- 2048. I've altered the disk buffers. The one thing i can only think of now is that my Laptop has a 4pin firewire input and the PC with XP has a 6pin firewire input and the sound card is also 6pin. So is there a chance that the sync issue is caused by the 4 - 6 pin cable and i therefore should get a 6pin card for my laptop OR has tascam made a balls of the new vista drivers????
This is not a solution, but I can claify one thing... the extra 2 pins on a 6 pin firewire are for the 12 volt power supply.... if you're using the 1804 (or any firewire interface) with a 4 pin laptop connection, you need to use an ac adaptor to power the unit... other than that all the connections are the same.
Now, all that being said, My 1804 is dropping out too... it's not freezing the computer or even the daw, but the playback head stops, audio stops and midi notes are gathered like mouse/keystrokes when a system is busy... as soon as the playhead starts again, all the midi notes I played during the freeze play at once.
I updated the chipset drivers on my toshiba a-100 and i updated both the firmware and drivers for the fw1804. Still hanging the playback.

I've tried multiple times to set up the 1804 with my mac pro...so far no go...the computer hasn't been recognizing the unit. I've installed, uninstalled, reinstalled a few times, made sure I had the right 6 pin fw cable, plugged it in when prompted, and still, the control box of the 1804 states there is no available device. I did downloaded the most current version. Before I go through this process again, do you have any advice on some more possible kinks?
