Question about Compaq Evo N610C Notebook
Upon turn on I get the following message:
Disk I/0 error: Status = 00001000
Windows 2000 could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
Please re-install a copy of the above file.
Don't have any back-up or reboot disk, what to do.
Even if you replaced the file, there are other issues at work here. The reason the system cannot find the file is there is (almost certainly) corruption on your hard disk. In particular, of the MBR.
There's a well-written article HERE about the MBR and how to restore it.
Do you happen to know the manufacturer of your hard disk? If so, you can go to the manufacturer's web site and download a diagnostic boot disk to test your hard disk. (Whenever there's evidence of file corruption, it's a good idea to test the integrity of your hard disk.) Please, let us know if you need assistance w/ this.
W/ respect to finding a Windows 2000 CD, I'm sure you can purchase one online or even from eBay. If you don't have your product key code recorded somewhere, no worry. You can use the product key code that will (should) come w/ your Windows "new" 2000 CD. I wouldn't worry about whether or not the product key code has been used b4. Windows 2000 does not authenticate or activate online like Windows XP and Vista do so that won't be an issue.
You can download the Windows 2000 boot discs online, too (for free) so I wouldn't worry about that either.
Whatever you do, DO NOT format the hard disk until you've retrieved your data. Hopefully, restoring the MBR will get you back into the sytem.

You need a disk. Borrow the same O/s disk from some IT person Or contact Microsoft / or HP authorised dealer they will be provide the disk.
Use repair option, (Else You will loose the data)
If you donot need data format and reinstall the Operating system.
