Question about Sony KP-53S35 53" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

This set was working yesterday

I read-up on how to adjust the focus and screen. It worked really good last night! When we turned set on this morning it was all blue. I tried to get to come back, but luck!
Maybe someone knows to get it working again?

Your screens are not set properly. Try turning up the green and red slightly to see if the set will restore raster. If not try turning thr blue down slightly. Screen controls have to be adjusted by taking voltage measurements while adjusting the G2 (screens)

Cant get the power to turn on,worked fine last night, it got unplugged, this morning plugged in, won't turn on and the power button just flashse

Flashing is either an error code or the set trying to boot up--some of the Mitsubishi sets if power removed will blink for a minute and then stop--then the set can be turned on.

The tv was working perfectly last night, but this morning was displaying a double vision type of screen in 2 different colors??? What could this problem be caused by? Is this an inexpensive problem to fix...

It sounds like a convergence problem--I will attach a few photos for you. I Just helped someone else here yesterday with same set and problem.

With free detailed step by step instructions he was able to repair set himself for under 25 dollars.

Let me know if pictures look ANYTHING like your problem.

If this helped you rate this solution as very helpful as I do this here for free.

Yes common problem it seems with these. I can help you get the set working but this fix only prolongs the inevitable so I'm told. (more about that at the bottom) Please read entire posting before starting. You will need to take off the front panel, there are 2 screws towards the bottom on each side behind little pop out plugs. Once those are out take off the panel (pull from bottom, sometimes the round clips at the top come off, either glue them back on the panel or leave them out). There are wires attached to the panel, you can either unhook them or just take them out of the "twist tie" holders and move the panel out of the way to the left. You will now see a thin panel. Remove this one also. Once that is off you will see the bottoms of the 3 glass tubes and on the "floor" of the set there is a group of 6 small knobs. This is called the focus block. Each row of 3 knobs are labeled either screen or focus, also, there should be 3 letters R G B (Red Green Blue). (We won't be adjusting the focus knobs). You will need to adjust the Blue screen knob (on my set it was the bottom left knob). If the set will stay on for a little bit you can adjust it with it on. Once you have found the correct knob (don't worry about the white paint) turn the set on, once you see the picture slowly turn the blue screen knob counter clockwise until the blue diagonal disappear. Be careful not to turn this knob too fast while the set is on. Keep in mind, it may take a little bit to break off the paint. You will see the screen turn back to normal as you turn the knob. Adjust it just until the lines disappear This should solve your problem. If the set won't stay on, with it off turn the knob about 1/8 turn counter clockwise then turn the set on. Once it is on you can fine tune it. Adjust it just until the lines fade out of sight. (You may have to adjust back the other way until the lines show up and then back it off again). Remember to turn the knob slowly. I have heard people getting charged a lot of money for this. I was also told that this is compensating for a dying component(s) all I know it has bought me at least a year. I also read that someone has gotten several years out of there set w/o repair just by doing this adjustment whenever its needed. (once the lines start presenting themselves). I can't see spending big money on these sets when you could put it towards a new set so I will keep it going for free as long as I can. I hope this works out for you. I'm tired of typing so good luck and post if you need any more help. BTW this adjustment works if this symptom presents itself in green or red also. Just substitute the blue knob to the applicable color. Now go put your TV back together :)

Good Day, Butchilee,
Sounds like you have patience, hope your TV has some trace left. Hit recommends that you replace the originals with
STK-392-150's and the resistors. Replace said items with care then back down on the screen/ focus controls and gradually bring the screens up until you have pic, adjust focus. Go into customer menu and adjust color down, set brightness to 50%, contrast to 100%. Then go back and adjust the screens for proper, black/white, tracking. AND It's best to double check the soldering connections.
Good Luck, Big Irish.

It sound like a bad tube there are three tubes red green and blue.
i suspect the blue tube is bad. tubes cost 160.00 plus labor 450.total . sometimes the tubes
can be fixed or the tv tech can adjust the screen voltage on the tube.

good luck thanks jay leadingedgeelectronics.com

Green shadows surrounding bright whites

finally a consumer that gives us plenty of info :)
sounds like an overdriven green tube, the only thing you can try is to find the G2/Focus block assembly, either behind front speaker grill or remove back of set and look for a black box approximately 5"X5" , this box will have 6 philips type adjustment screws(plastic) 3 are for focus, do NOT adjust these,
the other 3 are marked "screen" the center screen adjustment screw is for green, turn it VERY slowly counterclockwise while the set is running and pray that your problem dis-appears, be advised that this is a HIGH VOLTAGE device so one hand in your back pocket the other hand turns the screwdriver, if the problem does not go away you have a poor green tube, good luck, sorry I can`t give you the exact location of the G2/Focus block, manufacturers move them to different places every year.

This sounds like one of your convergence IC's has burned out. There are 2 IC's in the set and the one that handles RH (Red Horizontal) has stopped working. The IC should be replaced and the set realigned by someone with experience.
