Had the same problem with my hp1510. Pulled the black cartridge and noted a large buildup of old ink on the pad below the cartridge. Pulled out the pad and cleaned it thoroughly with alcohol and dried it well. Replaced the black cartridge with a new one as the old one was nearly out of ink. Turned the printer on and printed a test page. It printed like new.

try to clean the unit if you can with a cotton swab and some alcohol. if it is an HP Officejet 1500, find the nearest trash can, that is the only solution to fix that particular model. been there, done that. i had to deliberately "misalign" the cartridge to be able to use it at all.
