Question about Epson Stylus CX5400 All-In-One InkJet Printer

Epson Stylus CX5400 prints bands of color

My Epson Stylus CX5400 prints horizontal bands of color (about 1/2" high, yellow then magenta then cyan) over the black text when I print documents. If I print a photo, this does not happen.
The printer is connected to a Windows computer (XP HE v2002 SP 2). The problem occurs whether I am printing from the Windows computer or from a networked Mac.
I imagine I must have unknowingly set some preference somewhere but I can't think of any place I haven't looked. Can you all help?

I did re-install the Windows drivers. I just downloaded the OS X 10 driver, but I'm not sure that it does anything when I'm networking through the Windows machine to the printer. (Problem is still there.) Perhaps I'll have time this weekend to plug the printer directly into the Mac.

Printing directly from Mac OS X, If I print from Word the problem is there, if I print from TextMate the problem goes away. Note that when I photocopy with the all-in-one, if I photocopy a black and white document using the B&W button on the printer, the multi-color bands are there, but if I print in color the bands are not there. Similarly, when I print a color photo from Corel PhotoPaint (from Windows), all is fine, but if I convert the photo to B&W and then print, the color bands appear.

So -- my guess is that if the printer gets instructions to print in color it is happy and if it gets instructions to print in B&W it is not. Presumably Word can tell that just text ought to be printed in B&W but TextMate is not that smart and just prints in the default color mode.

Here is an example of a black and white document as it prints on the CX5400.

  • PWCrockett Apr 08, 2008

Different documents from different apps, but I doubt that the documets have anything embedded -- in fact, all printed fine before the problem started.

As best as I can remember, the problem started when the black ink ran very low. It seemed like the printer was trying to use colored inks to approximate black on a couple documents before we changed out the black ink cartridge. Then when the new black cartridge was installed, the problem popped up. All Epson brand cartridges.

Do you suppose it is worth $30 to get another black cartridge to see if somehow the cartridge is causing the problem? I don't see any way that anyone would design the print head carriage so that insertion of a cartridge could cause a logical error (which this seems to be), so a new cartridge seems like it would be a waste of money.

    I'm in US (North Carolina).

Got fed up with Windows (over other issues), installed Ubuntu Linux, same printing problem. E-mailed Epson, they punted -- said the hardware is kaput and I need a new printer. Meanwhile, the magenta cartridge ran out -- as soon as the cyan and yellow run out, I'll have a serviceable B&W printer. Can't just remove the cartridges -- the printer knows they aren't there and won't print.

have you tried downloading the drivers and installing the printer to the mac? I mean.. just to make sure that the printer is not the problem.. Also, I can only guess that you have uninstalled and tried re-installing the printer's drivers fresh from the web?

    best I got..

Directly hooking the printer to mac and windows computer are you getting bandings still? interesting issue... we will isolate it first by trying to hook printer directly to both computer, if its printing fine when directly connected, then there is something on the application or communication process. try printing a different document using same application when on the network and try printing from different application as well. update me afterwards..

Very interesting indeed... i will say that there is something wrong with the main board on the printer itself because even if you try copying a colored document in which you want to copy it as a black and white image its giving you those bands... and the thing is you cant control color management from printers control panel alone when copying. When printing from an application you can turn color management off on printer drivers but again if you are using printer as a standalone and when printng from computers and you are getting exact results that means that there is something wrong with the printer.

Are you using the same documents/file on all application?

You've either got clogged jets, or those two ink-wells are empty.

If running a "cleaning" does not improve anything,
then try replacing the ink-cartridge.

Horzontal white lines cut through print and picture copies. When doing head allignment the horozontal bars all have a white gap, 1 through 7. Epson Stylus CX5400

You don't need to do head alignment, because it is for vertical banding in printout. Vertical banding can be minimized by disabling high speed option without doing head alignment. If your printout have horizontal white lines, do check nozzle and head cleaning, or you can minimize white lines by printing in best quality (photo).

Epson Stylus CX5400 - Printing is bad even after Head cleaning!

Before replacing the print head on the printer try these steps , and if the printer get long without printing the changes of ink getting dried id high and resulting streaky printing or missing ink on the paper even if the ink is detected by the printer ...

# Hold the cartridge upside down, with the bar-code label facing you and take a damp paper towel.
# Use the towel to wipe the printhead of the cartridge on the bottom (where the ink comes out). Wipe the printhead horizontally in one direction only (left to right).
# Continue doing this until it looks clean.
# Then dab the cartridge on the towel to make sure the ink is flowing.
# Next, look inside the printer and locate the carrier that holds ink cartridges. Caution: Make sure the cartridges are not installed at this point.

1. Look for a shiny piece of metal underneath the contacts at the back of the carrier.
2. Take a damp cotton swab (use water only!) and wipe along the bottom of the shiny metal piece. Note: You may need more than one swab.

# Reinstall the cartridges, making sure you snap them correctly into the printer.
