it is not a sofware problem... if the disk was recognized before.

try reformatting the disk and select fat32 as file system. do not chose quick format.

try again to connect to dvd player.

I am trying to view pictures and videos as well as music form my seagate 250gb expansion portable hard drive, through my dvd player via usb port. it reads "no data" is there anything that i can do to...

Most probably your harddrive is formatted using NTFS file system, while your DVD player only understands FAT32 filesystem.
Check the format of your drive by hooking it up to a computer and opening it's properties. And check your DVD player's specifications regarding USB support in it's manual or online, on manufacturer's website support section.
If indeed the filesystem type is the problem, you can do a couple of things:
1) Purchase a Flash pendrive of suitable capacity (these are FAT32 usually) and use it for viewing pictures & videos on your DVD player,
2) Move everything temporarily from your external hard disk to your computer's disk and re-format your external drive using FAT32 filesystem. Note, that FAT32 has some disadvantages, like a 2GB file size limit. And also remember, that formatting the drive wipes everything from it, so be sure to copy all stuff to your computer's internal drive first!
3) Check the possibility of connecting your PC to the TV directly and forget about the DVD player for viewing pictures and videos.

I download free movies to hard drive, than I burn them, and my dvd player says no playback available or a big red x shows on tv screen, what am I doing wrong/

You probably have burnt the dvd disc using a video format that is not compatible with your player.
A lot of DVD players will not play .AVI or DIVx files that are commonly downloaded.
Your DVD player manual should list the formats it will play.
Convert downloaded movies to a compatible format before burning to disc.
There are several conversion programmes available via the web - at a cost of approx $50.00.
AVS4U works ok.

Disc error "playback feature may not be available on this disc"

Hello arnita2211,

This error message is due to an improper format, that your dvd player can't handle. To correct this you need to use a program such as nero and in nero is a program called nero vision, that will recode the movie file into a dvd playable format.

You can download a trial of nero here
http://www.nero.com/enu/downloads-nero9-trial.php
You will have to purchase a license when the trial ends. Sorry we cannot give you a serial key for this as it is Illegal.

Thank you for trying Fixya!

Have just bought dvp 5960 it will not play downloaded off my computer just shows unknown disc

The DVP5960 should play ANY DVD format except DVDRAM.

Do bought DVDs play ok? If so, then the problem is probably not the player.

What file type are you burning on to the disc? .AVI (DivX) & .VOB (DVD) files should be ok.

If you are using Windows Explorer to drag & drop the files to the disc, you will also need to finalize the disc.

Hard Drive Problem

This has happened to me once. I unplugged it overnight and plugged is back in and everything (Except for the for the DVD that was being written when it malfunctioned) Worked fine. I suspect that a Capacitor is going bad but it’s still working (for 4 months) and I will put off any real trouble shooting until it fails hard.

Wont play commercial dvds

should i assume that the drive work previouly with com dvd? my annlysis of this problem is that the dvdrom is not able to read the format the dvd is in. the format of the hard drive does not determine the ability to read or not read a dvd. that is the job of the optical disc.so dont worry about the format that is in.ok. the other aspect of the ability to read dvd is the software. windows media player and other that are of age has a inability to play some new format dvd. best bet install the newest version of power dvd put the disc and check should start automat pending setting you may need to go to my computer and double clickon the romdrive. let me know.

None of my DVD players will show photos from CD-R photopro (maxell)

What type of pic file are you burning to the CD? What format are you using as a burn profile? Without knowing this, my only guess is your DVD player can't show the pics in the format used, so you need to work around that problem. Shouldn't be too hard, reply back with more info...
