Question about GE JVM1870 Microwave Oven

Magnetron I call GE and they are sending me a new Magnetron. Do you have the instructions on how to install?

Same problem second time around. Microwave runs perfectly, but does not heat. 3 years ago, had magnetron replaced for $200. Three years later, oven has stopped heating again. Magnetron still under warranty, but GE will charge over me over $200 in labor fees to replace magnetron. GE also refused to waive $89.00 basic service visit fee, if problem does turn out to be 2nd defective magnetron. Instead, offered new machine at $400. Choice now is junk it and find a reliable manufacturer or risk $89.00 in case its just a fuse. Any advice?

You'll have to remove it from the wall, then remove the outer cover.

The installation instructions are very handy in this case, and it's best to have two people since the microwave can be heavy and awkward.

You can download GE owner's manuals and installation instructions here.

Once it's out of the wall, you need to remove the outer cover and then there will be an access panel to take out. From there it should be pretty obvious. Lots of screws to take out, usually.

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

My GE microwave model #JVM1640WB microwave stopped heating and is making a humming noise. Everything else about it is fine. Light, keypad, turntable, all work normally. Just no heat. How do I...

Hello, installing is quite straight forward if you know what youre doing. BUT, be very careful of the voltage in the capacitor even when its off,it is lethal! When you change the magnetron it is advisable that you also change the diodes. Again make sure that the capacitor is fully discharged, by switching the microwave off, unplugging it, and discharging the capacitor with an insulated screwdriver, it will be noisy. Next unsolder the old diodes and fit the new ones(check their polarity). Replace the magnetron and when all looks good, switch it on. If it works, good, if not there could be a power supply problem. 9 times out of 10 its the magnetron. Good luck.

What is your price to replace a magnetron tube for a Spacemaker XL Microwave Oven Model # JVM1650SB004

You're addressing a public help forum, not a specific servicer.

Generally a servicer will charge about $75 to visit the home, about $75-90 more to do the work, and about $75-90 for the part.

You can save the service call charge by removing it from the wall and taking it into the shop yourself.

You can download GE owner's manuals and installation instructions here. But that one seems to have a bad link.

A backup copy is here. It has a 9-year warranty on the magnetron.

GE will send you the magnetron to do it yourself. Call them at 888-239-6832.

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order other parts by entering your full model number here.

GE Advantium won't heat

Actually, these have a 10-year warranty on the magnetron and on the halogen speedcook lamps.

GE will even send you the magnetron to replace it yourself. Call them at 888-239-6832.

The full service manual with installation instructions is here.

Part ordering help (if you need other parts) is here.

I'd recommend that your bookmark this link to your favorites.

If you or someone you know want to replace the magnetron yourself, you will need to remove the oven from the wall.

If so, the installation instructions are very handy, and it's best to have two people since the microwave can be heavy and awkward. Thewy are in the service manual.

You can also download GE owner's manuals and installation instructions
here.

If you prefer to replace it though, I would suggest doing Google searches to try to find 240V microwave ovens. They're the exception.

Ge spacemaker just stops as if it over heats, then come back on after 5 to 10 minutes

Chances are the magnetron is overheating and its thermostat is tripping, interrupting power to the whole oven until it cools back down.

This provides critical protection for the magnetron.

An overheating magnetron can be due to:
  • operating oven without cover(s) in place
  • wrong magnetron installed in oven
  • an old or otherwise failing magnetron
  • cracked magnetron magnet
  • improper power line voltage at outlet (should be 110-125VAC)
  • cooking foods low in moisture (popcorn & bacon, e.g. - add 1/2 cup of water in rear oven)
  • failed or inoperable cooling fan or hood vent exhaust fan
  • deteriorating foam weatherstripping seals in air ducts or on outside cover
  • blocked air vents (dust, animal nest debris, insufficient free air space behind & around oven, etc.)
  • clogged or greasy charcoal filter or grease filter
  • blocked duct in hood vent exhaust
Accessing some parts for testing will require you to pull the oven from the wall and remove the cover.

If so, the installation instructions are very handy, and it's best to have two people since the microwave can be heavy and awkward.

You can download GE owner's manuals and installation instructions here.

Some GE models have a nine or ten year warranty on the magnetron. You'd have to check your owner's manual to find out.

You can find links to helpful exploded view diagrams and part ordering help here.

I'd recommend that your bookmark this link to your favorites.

If it's under magnetron warranty, GE will send you the magnetron to do it yourself. Call them at 888-239-6832.

Or you can contact GE to find a local authorized servicer.

If nothing else, you can save about $75 by taking it to the shop yourself.

My ge countertop microwave suddenly became very hot and seems totally dead

Chances are the magnetron overheated and the thermal protector (thermal cutout or thermostat) on the magnetron tripped and interrupted the power.

This may be due to a blocked air vent, clogged filter, blocked outside vent, failed internal cooling fan, or failing magnetron.

There should be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille or elsewhere, and it is very helpful when troubleshooting, & testing.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

If it's within the magnetron portion of the warranty (usually 5-9 years) but out of the original full warranty (usually 1 year), then your manufacturer will cover the part cost, but not the cost to visit you or the labor charge to do the work.

Advantium Microwave oven model SCA2000BWW takes twice as long to warm up food...Is the cap going bad?

Assuming the AC line voltage is correct, vents are not blocked, and the filters are not blocked, it's probably the magnetron.

If it's within the magnetron portion of the warranty (10 years) but out of the original full warranty (1 year), then your manufacturer will cover the part cost, but not the cost to visit you or the labor charge to do the work.

We have the service / repair manual for this model and have uploaded it to our site here for free download to help you.

The microwave stopped heating. Everything else is working fine.

GE MAGNETRON REPLACEMENT

With the symptoms you have, I would most strongly suspect a shorted high voltage rectifier diode or a bad magnetron, or a loose and possibly corroded connection on the magnetron's terminal.

The diode is a fairly cheap fix, and your magnetron is still under the part warranty, but you would have to pay labor.

If you or someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical safety information and disassembly information at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa.

There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

Here are some links you or someone you know can use for test help, but read their safety warnings first:

http://www.gallawa.com/microtech/diode.html
(if it's not shorted or burned, it's probably okay)

http://www.gallawa.com/microtech/mag_test.html

Since it's within the magnetron portion of the warranty (5-9 years) but out of the original full warranty (1 year), G.E. will cover the part cost, but not the cost to visit you or the labor charge to do the work.

Sometimes they will send you the magnetron to do it yourself.

If nothing else, you can save about $50-75 if you remove it from the wall and take it to a GE-authorized servicer.

You can find a GE-authorized servicer by calling GE Appliance Service at 1-800-848-7620 or here.

Accessing some components for testing and possible replacement will require you to remove the oven from the wall.

GE microwave replacement magnetron

I also have a HotPoint (GE) Spacesaver Microwave Oven (MWO)that we got at Home Depot about 3 yrs ago. The magnetron quit yesterday and I found out online that this is a common occurance with GE MWO's. I found this string and thought I would attempt to have GE send me a magnetron to replace the defective original part.

I called Customer Relations (1 800-386-1215) and spoke with Nikita. I informed her nicely that I was aware that this is a common problem with GE MWO's and that I am a Union Electrician who would like to perform this repair myself. I simply needed the replacement part. She was very understanding and asked for the model and serial number and after a few minutes she supplied me with an order confirm #.

The part should arrive in a few days via FedEx and we will be back into space age cooking and also our appliances will still match. Thanks to all who posted to this string and clued me in (You have saved me a C note!).
