Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

Refridgerator isn't keeping cold

I have a 6 year old Kenmore refridgerator that is suddenly not keeping cool. The fridge section is not keeping cool at all (the groceries all spoiled), and the freezer part is working okay (though not as cool as normal), but the ice maker (inside the freezer) is barely functioning (making one thing of ice per day, rather than filling the entire bin in a couple days). It steadily got worse over the course of about 2 weeks or so, but now the fridge section isn't cold at all (it's room temp).

What do you think the problem is? Is it fixable by a normal handy husband, or should I call a repair person? And how much do you think this repair should cost (if I hire a repair person)? Thanks!

    There's a small # 106 and then the Model # 72102100 Ser # EL5017676 Mfg. date 12-01.

I don't know what a compressor sounds like. I don't hear any clicks.

The fridge sounds normal... but then again, I don't listen to my fridge on a normal basis, so I'm not quite sure what I'm listening for. I listened to it very closely and I hear a normal hum of the fridge, and I hear a slight whirl-hum on the top half (which is the freezer half).

There is no frost inside anywhere of my freezer (there never is).

I don't know how I would know if the freezer fan is running. Where is it located, and how would I know if it's running?

    Thanks so much! :-)

Okay, I pulled a bunch of food out to access the back... and I found frost at the back of the freezer. What does that mean?

I can't figure out how to get the cover off of the back part inside the freezer. I think I'd have to break it. Any ideas on how to do it? I found the manual to my fridge, but it doesn't say anything about anything technical like that.

Alright! So is there a specific part that my DH can replace? He's very handy. And where can we order it from? Is there some sort of fix-it manual for the fridge (since the users manual doesn't seem to have anything related to the technical workings of the fridge)?

    Thank you SO much!!!

I'm having the same issue, I think! My refrigerator is not keeping food cold and the freezer is working fine. This happened just after we noticed that the freezer was a little too cold. We reduced the temp by 1 and noticed that the fridge hardly worked after. Since then we've cranked the fridge up to seven (highest setting) and still nothing, but the freezer goes on staying very cold. I have unplugged the fridge and plugged it back in, hoping it would reset and then started searching on the net for answers and found this post. To answer your questions to the original poster, I noticed frost in the freezer for the first time today. I have a freezer on the bottom model Kenmore (model # 596.75232402). Help! I'm having a party tomorrow and need to fix this right away! Thanks!

What is the coldest setting for a kenmore refridgerator

If your refrigerator section is not cold enough at the normal setting you may have a problem.
If you can't find enough information at the link below resubmit your question and include the model number. It should be inside the refrigerator section. It's usually on the upper right wall.

Sounds like you have a relay switch or igniter not working. If it is less than 6-8 years old, this probably,is the problem.

Fridge does not stay cold

If the compressor is running continually, could be short of gas , or a compressor problem, ie not pumping properly, make sure it has plenty of ventilation

Kenmore Elite bottom freezer refridgerator

I just went through this with my refridgerator and actually posted one of the questions. Here is what I found ........

In the freezer compartment behind the panel there is an evaporator fan which pulls cold air from the freezer and pushes it up into the refrridgerator compartment. If the fan is not working it is one of three things.. 1) there is so much frost in the fan area the fan blade is stopped and cannot push the cold air into the refridgerator compartment or the air channel is blocked. 2) there is no electricity going to the fan (usually tied to the door switch of the refirdgerator compartment, and 3) the motor is dead and will have to be replaced.

Solution to #1 - defrost but there is another problem in the "frost-free" part of the system which must be addressed or the frost will return and it will happen again in the future.

Solution #2 - check to see there is power to the fan. (most are 110VAC but some are 100VDC. Use a meter and check)

Solution #3 - If there is power, the motor is dead. Replace the motor. Be aware that AC and DC motors are different and replace per manufacture's specifications.
