Older Vivitar 28mm Lens on New Nikon D50 Digital Camera

I would like to be able to use my older Vivitar wide-angle 28mm lens on my new Nikon D50 Digital camera. The lens was used on an old Canon EF 35mm film camera that was stolen but, I still have the lenses.
I understand that adapters are complex but, have heard that this is possible. Nobody in the stores seems to have a clue as to where to start.
Are you aware of an adapter that would allow this to happen? I would be grateful if you are.

Bob, there are several reasons why this won't work, mainly cost

An older manual focus wide angle will work in the manual mode on a D50. The can be had very cheap on eBay and the like.

Converting one that has a Canon FD mount to a Nikon is possible, but you would need one with a Nikon mount for parts. The focal plane distances are different between Nikon and Canon. An adapter for this is not possible without adding optics to compensate

How do i set wide angle on my nikon d3100

You don't "set wide angle." Wide angle is not a function of your camera, it is dependent on the lens you use on your camera. You need a lens with a low focal length such as 24 mm.

Is the Vivitar 21mm 3.8 a good lens for Nikon?

For what you can buy them for these days, they're excellent and were usually made by Kiron who made excellent lenses in their own name and also for Tokina and Vivitar.

But unless you're using a full frame Nikon (i.e. 35mm or the full frame digital professional bodies) then it's nothing special as it has the same angle of view as a 31.5mm lens (close enough to a 28mm for discussion purposes). A 28mm f3.8 offers no advantage over many of the kit zoom lenses which come with many Nikons and with the huge advances in optical design since the 21mm Vivitar was made are likely to be optically superior.

On balance, if your Nikon is a 35mm film SLR or a full frame sensor version then go for it as it's a fantastic super-wide angle lens. With anything else, it simply doesn't make much sense. What it will still do though is offer fantastic depth of field which will be lacking in relative terms on a 28mm lens designed for APS-C sensors.

If you're looking at the camera without a lens on it, there should be a little flat protrusion in the lower left. Make sure that it is protruding and not obstructed.

This lens was manufactured by Kino (aka Kiron) made in 2001. I will try to find out it's compatibility list and post it here when I have it.

Lens focusing problem

I doubt that there is anything you can do yourself. Are you willing to disassemble the lens? I wouldn't be willing to do so.

Take it to a camera repairer and get a quote to see if it is economical to repair or cheaper/easier to replace.

Good luck.

Nikon d50 and lens

I don't have this kind of camera myself, but on my Canon D350 there is a switch on the lens that sets manual/automatic focus. Mine is marked MF/AF ans is just a simple switch. Check to see if this might be the case on yours, too. Also check the contactts on the lens and camera to see if they might be dirty. And be very careful not to get any dust into your camera housing! -Chris
