CLEANING THE DISC LENS ? If this unit still does not perform properly although you refer to the relevant sections and to ?TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE? in this Owner?s Manual, the laser optical pickup unit may be dirty. I have the same unit. Similar problem but mine does not erase the disc. It says disc error on almost all dvd that are store bought and kicks them out. Will play almost all of the ones I recorded on it and finalized. I must let a disc in it at all times or door will not open. Lots of bad stuff on the net about this unit. It is a lemon! Mine is out of warranty and sony wants $175 to fix. Saw some blogs where it was serviced 3 times and still not right. Buy a new one before investing in the unit you have as there are many gremlins in it! Sorry I cannot offer specific help but this is where I am at!!

SOURCE: Problem Recording HDD to DVD-R
I had a few problems with my philips 3450 - I downloaded the latest software upgrade at www.philips.com/support , and my issues were resolved. Worth a shot...
Only other thing I can think of is you may have a faulty batch of DVD-Rs?
Best of luck!

I had that exact same problem. I would record a bunch of dvds with no problems for months and then some and one day it doesn't work. Only this showed up E4 EA03738B. However I've found the solution. Instead of going out and returning the recorder or buying new dvds just purchase a Laser Lense Cleaner. It's a dvd cleaner. Works like a charm.

SOURCE: MODEL LG RC299 NOT
I also have this annoying problem - but I bought mine new on ebay and have zero after-sales support. I have tried all the hacks I cna find over the last 12 months and when I am finished, the messages all say 'congratulations, you're now region free'. But even the local DVDs don't work. Disc ejects itself with irritating message 'unknown disc'. Does anyone have this problem who has a SALES RECEIPT from an authorised LG dealer? If so, can you jump up and down with LG until they offer a solution? Thanks!
