Will not turn on

I have a Compaq Presario 700 that will not turn on. When plugged into a/c adapter, the indicator light on the adapter flashes very quickly and smells like something is burning in the laptop. The laptop currently does not have a battery to see if it would power on that way. Thank you for the help

I was thinking it was something on the motherboard. I was looking for something more specific. Thanks

Hello longlanky

If you smelled burning, then, there's likely been a high current event that has damaged electronic components on your motherboard.

To prevent further damage, I recommend you not turn it back on for now. Rather, take it to an authorized repair service (authorized by the computer's manufacturer). See if you can find one that will diagnose the problem for free or will apply the cost of the diagnostic to the repair costs.

There will be parts replacement involved - more than likely the motherboard. So, this could get expensive unless the computer is in warranty. The usual warranty period for hardware is one year unless you purchased an extended warranty.

If you have data on your laptop's hard disk that you need to retrieve, you can purchase a 3.5" external laptop hard disk enclosure and install the hard disk in it to get at your data. Just let us know if that's the case and we'll step you through purchasing an appropriate enclosure and through removing your laptop's hard disk.

Please, let us know if this response was helpful for
you or, of course, if you have any further questions.

Thank you
BJ

I'm not sure how much more specific I could have been. Perhaps I misunderstand your question.

When it comes to computers these days, if something fails on the motherboard, your only option is to R&R (remove and replace) the motherboard. No one does depot level (component level) repair anymore. It isn't cost-effective.

Unless you have schematics for the particular motherboard installed in your laptop and you have access to the appropriate equipment and replacement parts AND you are proficient w/ component-level trouble-shooting and repair of circuit card assemblies (possibly multi-layered circuit card assemblies when it comes to motherboards), then replacing the motherboard is really the only option you're going to have for repairing the computer.

A visual inspection of the motherboard will likely reveal burnt components and possibly heat scoring on the board itself; also possibly runs on the board that have lifted away from the board because of the heat. This is not necessarily (in fact it's unlikely) the only damage the motherboard has incurred. There will be other components that are damaged or failed as well as a result of the high current event. This is where true expertise in electronic trouble-shooting and repair comes in. Again, no one does this anymore. Any service center that you take your computer to for repair is going to want to R&R the motherboard.

That's just the way of the world these days.

Please first make sure that your adaptor is working.
Try to remove the battery and connect your laptop to the adaptor. Swith on. If nothing chages, then there is good chance that you have a motherboard related problem.
