Presario SR1030NX Hard Drive Removal

This computer (Presario SR1030NX) seems to not want the hard drive removed. I can't get at the right side of the hard drive cage because every panel is welded or riveted together, including the hard drive cage itself -- it is not removable.

I removed the front cover, and the hard drive ought to come out, but it's stuck on the right side, somehow. I can't see that side of the hard drive/case except through the tiny holes in the case. So I don't know what is causing it to hang up. I don't want to force it unless I'm sure I know how it should come out.

Does anyone know what I'm talking about??? And what is the solution?

Thanks.

I finally figured out what the problem was. The pdf Part Replacement Guide offered by Hollyecho shows that the drive should be easily pulled out through the front... but mine wouldn't. The problem was that there are two tabs on the "hidden" side of the drive bay, which are just cutouts in the metal of the drive bay... these tabs were bent in, pressed into the drive, at a notch in the drive body apparently. This is what was preventing the drive from coming out. It appeared that this was done intentionally - to further secure the drive perhaps - but why it was done on the "closed" side of the unit is beyond me!

I was able to reach around while looking through the holes in the chassis (under bright light) and permanently bend the tabs away from the drive slot (I used a very tiny screwdriver to do this).

I hope this helps someone else with this problem.

If your computer is running kind of sluggish, you can fix it with an easy clean up of your registry. Here's a link to a free scan that works well:

I've used this one and it sped up my computer by quite a bit. Hopefully this helps.

you don't need to setup as a Slave drive like IDE drives. You simply install the new SATA drive on an open port and follow the steps in this thread to format the hard drive. This will allow the hard drive to be used as a storage drive or whatever you plan to use it for.

Presario2580us pwers up and fan run but (1) battery wont charge (2) harddrive wont work are these two issues related? if so will removal of battery allow harddrive to run. if so how do i remove...

These two problems could be related in the way that a power surge could have fried the hard drive and the battery. However that is not very likely. Even if that were the case you still have the same problem. A battery that won't charge, and a Hard drive that won't work.

Here is an included link to the service manual for your 2500 series Compaq presario.

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01122313.pdf

in the manual just check on the removal section, then the sub-section for the battery, and hard drive removal.

I was able to find your battery on-line for $40.
I found several Hard drives online that would fit your laptop. The range was between 40-75$, depending on how much space on your HDD you desire. What you had in your laptop to star with was only 40 gigabytes, or GB. an 80 GB drive would cost you only about 40, while a 250GB would run closer to $75.

Your battery is a flip of a latch, and you should be able to slide your battery out of the Left side of the computer if I am reading the diagrams correctly. Replacement would be the same, but in reverse. Gently slide battery in until flush with outside of computer, then latch shut.

Your Hard Drive is simply using a small Philips screw driver to unscrew two screws from the4 underside of the case. These screws will be about 2 1/2" apart towards the front edge of the computer's bottom. Basically the HDD sits underneath the touch-pad. The old Hard drive that you pull out of your laptop will have a bracket surrounding it, and a Hard drive connector. both the Hard drive bracket, and connector will need to transfer to the new drive in the same way that it was removed from the old drive. Be careful to face the drive up or down the proper direction in the bracket, or the drive probably won't fit. You could even take pictures of the removal, so you have reference for the re-installation.

If this were me, and I had the drive and battery I could do it in 30mt. at most. An unskilled User who took the time to do his/her home-work could do this in under an hour for sure.

Just one last note the proper order for this job would be to unplug the machine, remove the battery, hit the power button for a few seconds(to reduce the risk of electrical surge while working on the sensitive electronics), then switch the hard drive, insert battery, plug in.

I would recommend charging the battery to full the first time before even turning on the laptop, for @ least four hours. Remember the new hard drive will be blank, so you will need to install an Operating system on it. I recommend windows XP home. there should be a sticker with a key code on it on the under-side of your computer. I would hope you would have a XP disc or know someone that can get one for you.

Best of luck my friend.

DONT BREAK....
it's clip on...to hold the drive in the slot....but you may find some screws on the side of the DVD / cd drive which is held to the case of the PC... just remove the screws and remove all the cables and just pull it out....

How to i replace my hard drive on a presario 5304?

If you replace your hard drive with a new one, you will have to reinstall your operating system onto that drive before you will be able to use your computer normally.

All the HOW-TO INSTRUCTIONS for your computer are found at the following link:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/documentSubCategory?tmp_task=useCategory&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&dest_page=product&product=93186

First unplug all the cables from the back of your computer and be sure to take note of where they go so you can replace them when you finish.

Take off the side panel from your computer by removing the 2 screws holding it on the back panel of the computer and pulling the side panel firmly backwards. Be sure to lift up up on the big plastic catch if there is one.

Complete details on HARD DRIVE REMOVAL are available at the Compaq Support website at the following link:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=bph03429&tmp_task=useCategory&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&dest_page=product&product=93186

Remove / replace your hard drive and cables as per the above instructions.

Once you get your new hard drive installed, boot your computer and go to your BIOS screen.
Repeatedly press F1 or F2 or F8 or F10 during startup before anything shows up on monitor.

Change your BOOT ORDER so that your CD / DVD Drive is the FIRST BOOT DEVICE.
Save changes and exit.

Now you can insert the OPERATING SYSTEM INSTALL DISK and reboot your computer to install your Operating System.

Good luck and please comment back and rate if this was helpful.

I think it is the same as HP. When you undo the cover just pull it right out by the small plastic. No screws holding the drive.

Compaq Presario SR1030NX fails to start

Sounds like the power supply or motherboard is biting the dust. U may consider power off, open case and clean out the dirt, check U'r connections and if the power supply smells, replace it.
Else replace the pc. When the power supply dies, it usually stresses the motherboard out and it dies later, sooner.
