Question about Acer Aspire 5100-5480 Notebook

1 Answer

Disc Drive Hello my name is Latisha Lockhart and I need some major assistance. I have an Acer Aspire 5100 with Windows Vista and my disc drive no longer works and I don't know why. One day it was working fine playing cds and dvds and then the next day it won't even play a thing. The funny thing is the computer doesn't even recognize that I have a disc drive. It says that it may be corrupted or missing I've done little research and found that there are other people who experienced the same thing and they said that it's a side effect of Vista. I found one website that says I need to download a new driver and extract the files but that did not work so I need to know what to do. Should I send it back to Acer because it is still under warranty or should I buy a disc drive. I need major assitance. Please Help!!

Thanks for replying to my cry for help. But I called Acer support line and they stated that the disc drive maybe corrupted and to send it back so that they can replace it. So we'll see how that goes and if anything else goes wrong. I think that I'll probably never buy another Acer computer again after reading comments about them on this site I found. But that's another story. I'll keep you posted.

    Thanks Again!!

I have the very same problem. This thing does not even recognize a cd/dvd when it is placed in the drive. I have had it for a little over a year. I would rather get another brand than to risk the same problem again unless of course there is some other fix.

Hi,

Like you, have heard of a couple of issues with this particular model as well as some others. Since it is still under warranty, perhaps your best bet is to send it back for replacement. I was also made to understand that since a number of their units have been failing while still under warranty that Acer opened up a page/site specifically to facilitate the return process here. The page has an option for parts only with a number to call (1-254-298-4696). Though this may be your first step, eventually I would suggest that you do send the whole unit if replacing the CD/DVD does not solve your problem. I am tempted to think that it is not the CD/DVD but a motherboard issue.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

I have replaced Vista with Windows Xp Professional in an Acer Aspire 5100. Everything went fine except that I can't install the chipset driver for video and the smbus driver. I have downloaded the drivers...

Vista has a known limitation of 50 characters for a path/filename in its 4th iteration. Place the installation files on the root of your hard drive (ie: c:\install), not your desktop or my documents... (if you need help with copy/paste and/or directory creation, please ask)
I am assuming you did not re-format the hard drive when installing XP.

I will research this further, let me know if starting with a smaller path helps...

CD drive not detected

I think somehow you've turned your CD drive off in BIOS. Turn it on again (if you don't know how to do it, post yout BIOS version, I'll try to help. BIOS version shows somewhere on the screen when you just turn on your computer. For example "AwardBios v.XXXX)

hello, have you tried a disk utility? (like acronis) find the brand of hard disk you have, and download the program, (all brands have a disk utility on the website) they will let you format, partition, test the drive. good luck hope this works for you.

This tends to happen to some drives...do you leave a disc in the drive when shutting down the computer?

you will have to restart it and take out the disk, or click on the "removable drives" tab in "My Computer" and hit the right arrow

Acer Aspire 5100 no longer "sees" its cd/dvd drive- anywhere.

You can check the BIOS to see if the drive is recognized and even attempt to boot from the drive using a bootable CD to verify it is functional (if using the Windows disc - just verify it reads - DO NOT REINSTALL)

If the drive works use the following to get the drive back in Windows:

Always backup your registry before editing and use care to find exact key!
Start Registry Editor (Start, Run and type in regedit then click)

Find "UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters" (and "UpperFilters.bak" "LowerFilters.bak", if they exist) value under the following key in the registry, and delete it:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Quit Registry Editor.

Reboot.

NOTE: You might need to reinstall any CD recording apps you have, if they start to not work completely, after doing this.

Acer 5100 lost dvd/cd drive

Is the DVD drive listed in device manager under CD/DVD drives at all? If so, remove it and reboot. Windows might be able to re-detect and reinstall the drivers for it, but odds are the drive is bad. You can try removing the drive from the computer, and use compressed air to blow out the area where it connects to the laptop. Also check the connection on the DVD drive to make sure there isn't any physical damage, bent pins, etc.

Hope this helps - remember to rate!

Acer Aspire 5720Z

This is going to be either a driver glitch or a bad drive. Start by uninstalling the drivers for the cd drive from the device manager, then reboot. The machine will find the drive and reinstall the drivers automatically. If this doesn't correct the problem, then unfortunately, the drive is bad and will need replaced.
