The black and white picture is caused by only 2 things.

You are trying to play back an NTSC disc in a PAL dvd player (or the other way around)
Your DVD player is set to NTSC when it should be set to PAL (or the other way around)

You will find options for setting PAL or NTSC in the setup menu under Video.

Try connecting to S-video or DVdcomponent.If you have only composite video input for TV,Connect to video cable to Yout in DVd,If you get a Black and white picture,Your Dvd video card is defective.
Maybe not cost effective replacing it.Contact local Philips service center.

Check if you have not accidentlychanged to progressive mode which can cause this proble.
Are you connected to TV using Composite video out?Try connecting using S-Video or DVd (component inputs).

DVP642 DVD Player is only working in Audio mode

Mine does the same. Cannot get a picture using the Yellow RCA output. Use an S-video cable if you can - it should still work. If you get a black and white picture using the S-video output, go to MENU > VIDEO page and change the output from PyBywhateveritis to S-video and the color will come back. I only found out mine was broken when I needed to use the s-video cable for something else and tried switching to the Composite Video (RCA) to no avail no matter how many cables or TV inputs I tried.

Open it up, look for a loading belt (black rubber band about 2 cm diameter) and replace it.

DVD picture is black and white

Sounds like you are either trying to play an NTSC (US or Asian) DVD on a PAL (European) TV.

Go into the DVD settings and look for picture, video or display options.

If the DVD is set to NTSC, then set to PAL.
