Problem with gas trimmer staying started

My 2 cycle gas trimmer will not stay started. I just pulled it out after the winter and have a huge problem. Will start on full choke and after a bit on half choke. When I go to switch it to run, or press the trigger to run it, it dies. .. At the end of last year it ran perfect and is only a year old... any suggestions???

I have the same problem, however, I cannot find the hi-idle adjustment screw on the carb... I have the lo-idle adjusted and have checked the spark-plug and it is good and clean with a nice tan color. I need direction as to where to look.

    thanks in advance,

    lars

If the trimmer is the kind with a round wheel selector for run, half choke, choke........I have the same problems. A buddy had the same kind and took it to a small engine repair joint. They replaced the carb and because it was less than 2 years old it was free. There must be a known problem that the Ryobi folks don;t want out but will fix if it's brought in.

I'm having the same problem. I can start my Ryobi 775r trimmer but it just wants to die when I pull the throttle. I've replaced the gas lines, using fresh gas, cleaned the muffler (as best i could) changed the spark plug. I removed the carb (Walbro), but only blew out the two gas lines. Up until now it's been good to me...Thank You for any help...Regards...JD

That is sooooo right. I had the same problem and after putting the whole machine apart I finally spotted those two screws next to the carbutator, and by adjusting them I managed to get the problem fixed. Note that if the machine turns itself off when you hit the gas, it may be that the air intake or the gas intake are either too open or too close. So, adjust them to your flavor....

Carburetor is out of adjustment. there are two carb adjustment screws on the side of the Carb. they require a special tool that is only $5 from your local mower repair dealer. those screws are the idle and Hi speed mixture adjustments. the carbs on Ryobi are set too lean. turn counterclockise to richen the mixture. just turn one eigth of a turn at a time. start w the hi speed.

The trimmer starts fine, but wont stay at high speed runs for a while then shuts off

Before pulling the carb apart, drain the fuel fit a new filter in the fuel tank, check the fuel hoses up to the carb for splits, cracks or leakage, replace if required.

Gas Trimmer will not stay started

Many times with a gas mix, after sitting for a while, the mix separates and gums up the carb. Taking the carb off and soaking it overnight in a parts or carb cleaner and running carb cleaner through the tank and gas lines will cure this.

I can't get it started and I"m following directions on side of machine.

Those direction are not accurate all the time, I usually prime mine 4-6 times. put mine on full choke with the trigger pressed and pull 1 time any more will usually flood it, If you have the choke that kicks off after you press the trigger, put the choke back on to half and pull the cord pressing the trigger, Then pull the cord until it starts without pressing the trigger. As before if you press and hold the trigger during the start it will flood these trimmers..This should start the trimmer. You may have to let the trimmer set for about 15 min if it was flooded.

My troy built starts but will not speed up enough to use even after it warms up. It is 2 years old but only has 3-4 hours of use on it . Can you help me?

Is it 2 cycle or 4 cycle? Meaning, does it take plain gas, or mixed gas?

Clean the plug, clean the carb with either choke cleaner (4 cycle) or wd-40 (2 cycle) by spraying it into the choke hole after you take off the air filter.

You may also want to spray some of the choke cleaner or wd-40 into the gas tank with the gas to help clean out the whole fuel system.

Only use choke cleaner for 4-cycle regular gas units. For mixed gas, use wd-40 in place of choke cleaner.

Try to start it and then go back and forth from half choke to full choke until it starts picking up.

Hedge trimmer put away for winter. will run but not stay running. put in new diaframs for carb . same results. i am questioning the gas cap now. is it possible that it can cause a problem with keeping this...

YES, this system relys on pressure and the ionic nature of gasonline to pull the fuel through the system. If the gas cap is off or damaged where a seal is no longer possible, try taping it up with duct tape and see if that helps

Weedeater dies when you open choke

After you start it and are in the second stage of the choke (half choke ) let it run for awhile until it warms a bit then try openning choke and going to full throttle.

Hard starting 4 cycle trimmer, 20 to 70 pulls

I got me one of these beasts and I can get her to fire for me in just 3 pulls.
(Oh yeah?! I can name that tune in just 2 notes!!)

Seriously....

Use that primer bulb. Use it with prejudice. Do NOT be afraid of it. What does this mean? Yes. Push it 10 times.

Choke full on.

Full throttle, choke fully on, give it a tug. You should see it hit and give a whitish puff of smoke.

Half choke - Position 2 - Full throttle, another tug. Should fire and rev with you still squeezing that throttle at full. Release throttle and LET IT IDLE at half choke for 30 seconds.

Move the choke completely off, continue to let trimmer idle for at least a minute to warm up the oil and block.

Git to whackin' that yard down. :D I just love my 575ES! (Polesaw attachment for the win)

GAS TRIMMER WON'T START - BUT ALMOST STARTS WHEN I POUR GAS IN THE SPARK PLUG POCKET, THE GAS THERE DRIES/DISAPPEARS FAST. MUST BE A GAS LINE SITUATION? WHAT SHOULD I DO?

The gas is going into the the crankcase. When the piston goes down it opens the ports and allows the gas to go down untill it could fill the crankcase. Start by blowing compressed air into the spark plug hole and allowing the piston to go to it's lowest position. This will usually remove any liquid gas from the crankcase. Next get yourself a small spray bottle and fill it with the same gas mixture your trimmer uses. Now you can spray a small amount into the spark plug port, replace the spark plug, full choke and pull till it pops. set to half choke and pull. I have also sprayed into the carb but you must open the throttle to allow the gas to enter the combustion chamber. Spray, close throttle, pull choke and pull. You may need to do this a few times for it to start. After it starts let it run at half choke for awhile until it warms a bit then open choke and go to full throttle. If this dosen't work it's possible to have other problems.
