I've had some intermittent problems with the dvd player shutting down during recording when the disk is more than 50% full. I have also had trouble and gotten a "Can't Finalize" error message when I try to finalize the disk. I have also noticed the disks read as 0:00 left on the disk even when I know there is at least an hour space left on the disks that I have recorded lately. My recorder is about 3 years old and I just started having these problems in the past month.

I have similar problem. I have recorded all of my old tapes on a DVD-RW disc (lots of time spent on it) and as I wanted to finalize them - it would display an recording error. Recently I purchased a new Sony blue ray player and I realized it would play the not finalized discs. I am still looking for a solution how to record these memories on a PC so I can edit them.
We need to narrow down where the problem lies. Even without finalizing the disc, you should be able to play back the recording. Can you do this? If you can play back the recording, the problem exists in the finalization stage and we'll need to concentrate there. Pplease update this and we'll proceed to the next step.
Are you using a DVD+RW disk? Unlike DVD-R, DVD+R and DVD-RW disks you cannot finalize DVD+RW disks on the Magnavox MWR10D6 DVD Recorder. Instead you have to make the disk compatable [Make Edits Compatible], this allows you to close the disk and play it on other DVD players.
go to: Setup ==> Edit Disk ==> Make Edits Compatible ==> Yes
Other than this nothing else comes to mind to troubleshoot this problem. Hope this helps.
I have been working throug a stack of 25 Windata, the cheap ones. DVD +R/ They have been working 100%, every time. The only problem I have is when I leave machine to shut itself down because I am not there to stop it at end of movie.. The disk becomes so full that I cannot get to disk to finalize and it will never play on another machine. When I hit the Disk Edit on such an overcrammed disk, the drop down menu with Finalize at bottom does not come up Only the hand with the red crossout sign over it comes up..
Some DVD players can't read -R & -RW disks. When you finalize make sure it is in Video mode not VR mode so the recorded disk will be able to work in most other DVD players. Also some DVD players only read recorded disks rated up to 1x, 4x, 8x, 16x, or a combination of these speeds.
Failing to Finalize and thus making the DVD 'playable' on other DVD Players is most often caused by the media (your blank disk), not the Recorder. Trying another disk, from the same 'stack' or manufacturer will often have the same result. But, it is a 'hit and miss' situation. As you have the recording on the hard drive it can be worth your while connecting another basic DVD Recorder to input the material to a disk in that recorder. Sounds silly perhaps, but I have actually done this - and had the disk finalized in the second unit.
