Although another consideration could be if you recently installed or downloaded a program which may have changed your video output range to a setting your video monitor wont handle. If this is the case and you can start the computer in safe mode, this will allow you to go into your properties settings and change it back. This way, a new vid card is not req.
please isolate the monitor. try using other good monitor and plug it into your desktop. if the monitor you use doesn't display it means the video card adapter is defective. you have to replace that one. otherwise vice versa.
I have the same problem, it just started.. is your pc still under warranty? I called HP and they are sending me a box so I can send it in for a repair.. it kind of **** my compute is dv5-1160us and less than a year old.. I am kind of mad, hope HP fixes it.. I don't know if it is the screen itself of the MO.. I tested it on a external moniter had no prob.. so thinking it is screen... well I will see what HP says and update you on that
