There are red, green and blue bands at the top of the TV. It started about 2 or 3 weeks ago and has progressively gotten worse now covering around 3 inches of the top of the screen. I'm thinking it is the convergence and was wondering if that was something I could replace on my own without getting a tv repair tech involved. I bought the TV about 16 months ago so I'm kinda bummed out this has happened so soon. Please help, thanks!
I have the same TV with the same problems. Sony has issued a recall for these tvs. Contact sony and will fix it for free or give you a discount on another tv.
This is an optical block problem and to fix cost's nearly as much as the tv!!! lucky i had extended warrenty, i had only had the tv for 13 months now i have had it for 18 months and the tv now wont turn on !!! i will never buy sony again!!
I have the same damned problem but it's a yellow band at the top of my screen....I sure am glad i read this post...I'm taking mine in too seeing as though it's only 16 months old...
I would suspect the optical engine as the likely cause of your problem. it would be safe to say that yes it is most likely the most expensive part to replace in that tv........did you get an extended warranty?

After talking to an authorized Sony repair tech I was informed that this model TV does not have convergence tubes/chips but rather an lcd lamp or something. He said it was a pricy part as well. I saw a post that said these TV's "never require convergence adjustments" which kind of backs up what I was told by the tech. Still need help, PLEASE!
I took it in to have the problem fixed and was told that the sensors on the lamp door had gone bad as well as the optics. I did not get the extended warranty however I did find out through the repair center that Sony has voluntarily extended the warranty on the optics for this TV to cover 2 years from date of purchase. Luckily it had been 13 months so I was covered there but the lamp door sensors ran me $230 parts and labor. If these sensors go out every time you replace the lamp, well that's just lame.
I have the 50e200 with the same problem. It went in today and I will post when I get the TV back.
Thanks/
Have owned my 50e2000 for 18 months. Noticed the "red" band about two months ago. Replaced the bulb to no avail. Will contact Sony about the 2 year extended manufacturers warranty Vdub mentioned. Hopefully still in effect. Thanks for the news.
I have the same problem any help out there.
I purchased my tv in Nov. 2006. I had the optical block changed in Nov. 2007 because of the red/yellow line at the top of the screen. Its now Nov. 2008 and the line is back again exactly 1 year. Currently waiting to see if Sony will cover labor on part replacement. There is no recall at this time for this specific problem that it seems everyone has with this model TV. Why not?
