Question about Philips 55PP9352 55" Projection Television

1 Answer

Philips HD 55PP935217

When the TV is on there is a white halo/shadow effect on the picture.  I've adjusted the colors and brightness and every other setting I could think of that might make a difference but nothing got rid of it.  I've even reset back to factory settings and nothing.  Has anyone else had or seen this before.

    Hi Mike,

Where is your repair shop located? I would like the coolant to be replaced by someone who knows what they're doing.

Afraid this is a common problem with Phillips, what happens is the coolant in the CRTs becomes contaminated, this is most common in the Blue and green, So what you have to do is have the coolant changed. Here at our shop we charge $250.00 for this. For most TV newbies this is money well spent. We have see coolant changes go horrible wrong, Anything from a coolant leak, broken CRTs, relay bad convergence after the repair, to the relay bad of a small leak that will destroy or burn your TV set down. Best bet is to get a repair shop that has the tools and expertize to do this for you

Colors on my TV seem to be washed out. Convergence is adjusted OK, brightness/color/tint settings don't seem to make a difference. I seem to have bright halos around all light colored images.

The fluid in the picture tubes needs replaced. It is a job for a professional. It usually costs about $250.00 for the job. You might say it's like giving your set an oil change.

Red and fuzzy picture can you help on my 50 inch phillips magnavox projection TV

This is a very common failure on Projection TV sets.
Screen looks 3D
Colors don't line up
One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
Screen is bowed or warped.
The other common problem is cloudy lens fluid. After many years the coolant in the blue and green lens will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, bright white, etc. You may even see halos around video.
You can see some example photos and find a solution here on Fixya.

51'' Philips rear projection TV with color issues

Philips has had a big problem with there coolant fluid becoming cloudy. The only way to clear it up is to have the fluid changed. With every projection crt tv there is a layer of cooling fluid between the face of the crt and the lens. This coolant cools the face of the crt. Over time the coolant breaks down and the light coming through gets distorted. The crt's have to be removed from the set to do this.

White halo around lettering

Do not adjust any knobs as instucted in the previous thread if you TV have a convergence problem. Doing so will only make things worse. The blog does however show you how to fix other common problems with these sets.

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

the picture color problem is the coolant in the CRTs. You can get the coolant replacemnt Kit at the following link. The other problem with the Input through DVD sounds like the signal board. You can get the replacement board and the Phillips CRT coolant kit at the following link.

Philips 55 inch hdtv rear projector

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.
