WG311 - Excellent Connection, No Internet

Last Saturday, I installed a Linksys WEFB11S4 router for my daughter, with WEP 64 Bit security. She has a Netgear WG311 USB wireless adapter.

After I installed router, I had to reboot her PC to get connected. Had excellent connection and connectivity to anything I wanted. Used Internet that night and next day, no problem.

Today she called and said she has 'Excellent Connection with limited connectivity'. Check SSID - she's on the router I installed. Had her go to the Network Wizard - it had no 'Find Network' button where it should have (I have a duplicate setup at home - 350 miles away).

Had her reboot her PC. No change. She can't get to the Internet.

I had her try to sign on to the Web Based Utility, it won't connect to that either. (If I had her connect an ethernet cable to her PC and router, should that connect?)

Any idea what the problem is?

netgear wg311 v3 not keeping signal

  • Anonymous Jun 20, 2008

I've had the same issue with ours. Connects fine while in the same room with the router, (have 2 computers on same network) but as soon as we reboot computer in the next room it says we are connected and wireless signal strength is at 100% but will NOT connect to the internet or the router. Have tried this several times and each time same result.

I do it for a living. In my experience with routers in general, they have a tendency to reset themselves with general poweroutages and power surges. I would suggest hard wiring to the router and going into the settings. It might surprise you to find the wep key changed itself during the week. Hope this helps.

How do I secure my D-Link WBR-1310 wireless router?

You can follow these steps in enabling wireless security on your router and do this steps using a computer wired to the router since once you save the settings your wireless network will be secure.

1) Open the internet browser and type the address 192.168.0.1 to login to the router. The default username is "admin" and leave the password box empty.
2) Click "Wireless Settings" on the left side.
3) Select the Security Mode ,Enable WEP Security.
4) Select the Authentication ,Shared Key.
5) Select the WEP Encryption , either 64-bit or 128-bit.
6) Select the Key Type ,HEX (only A-F and 0-9 number allowed) or ASCII (all number and character allowed).
7) Enter a WEP key as your security password to login to your wireless later.
8) Press Save Settings to save all settings changed. Reboot the router.

What does wep64 key mean and what do i need to do fot the xbox 360 live connection

WEP Wired equivalent privacy is supposed to give the same security as a wired network in a wireless network. 64 means a 64 bit key is required to get the thing working. Look on the bottom of your wireless adaptor for the key it will be in the format xxxx xxxx xxxx xxxx. type it in carefully when requested.

Does router wrt160n have both 2.5GHz and 5GHz

Hello Bill,
The problem sounds like you have the router set to WPA security. The WMP11 cards do not support this security standard, they only use WEP 64 bit and 128bit. If you attach to the router with your vista machine and go into the configuration settings and change the security level to WEP you should be able to get online.

Wireless not working from netgear wg311 to a new bt homehub2

Hi Backatya,

Check what kind of security you upgraded BThomehub 2 uses. Since the hub supports more security-types then your adapter does, I suspect an incompatibility there.

You can solve it by connecting through cable and changing security to WEP or WPA (not WPA2).

WUSB54GC model wireless adapter won't connect after months of use

Instead of using the passphrase use the wep key 1 that you created on the router page when you generate it using the passphrase.

Then when you try to connect using the linksys wireless monitor just leave the passphrase blank and type in the wep key1 box the key that I mentioned earlier.

Wireless connection

This has a problem with your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
Go contact them for this.
Or you might have MAC Filters installed in your router settings.
Or you might WEP WEAP turned on your router settings.

Wirless Network keeps failing

Hi,

It is possible that you need to further fine tune your WEP configuration. To verify if it's the security lock, try running the laptop and the router without the WEP security (disabled) and determine if you still get the "Limited connection or no connectivity".

If yes, you have just eliminated that area and could consider other possibilities, otherwise you then have to concentrate on the WEP security.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back on any developments (or lack thereof) or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

I cannot connect my laptop computor to my main computor

Bluetooth is not WiFi, they are two seperate technologies.

you need a Wireless adapter 802.11b/g for your laptop,

you would connect the two to each other using an adhoc connection,

If you had a wireless router for your internet you could connect directly to the router, (and then you would not have to have your main computer on for you to access the internet.

BTW if your Main machine is near your phone point (for internet connection) you would not need a wireless card for your pc, as you could connect via LAN cable to the wireless router (make sure you get one with lan ports)

Wireless ADSL setup for WIN ME

Hi, I am assuming that you have installed the necessary USB drivers for the LINKSYS Wireless G in your ME machine and that you can ping your router from the same desktop. Based on your post/description "...The connection to the router is there but I can not connect to the internet...." would indicate that your Win ME desktop is not configured to use the wireless router as the default internet gateway. Rather than "Obtain IP add automatically" in your ME, try manually configure and to "Use the following IP address". Follow and use the numbers of your laptop's wifi connection except for the IP add. Simply add 1 to the last digit. For example if your laptop's wifi IP add is 192.168.100, make the ME 192.168.1.101. All the other numbers should be the same (SubNet Mask, Default Gateway, DNS) To be able to get the laptop's numbers, open a command prompt and type "ipconfig /all". It is also possible that security settings (WEP, WPA or MAC filter) are not working right with the ME machine, try turning them off in your router to test. Hope this be of some help/idea. Post back how things turn up or should you need additional information. Good luck and kind regards.
