Try getting a few cans of compressed air from an office supply store and blow out all the compartments and the intake and exhaust vents on the side and underneath the laptop. If this does not control the problem, then you may have to re-apply thermal paste to the processor and heatsink. Also check the BIOS files from Gateway, there maybe an updated BIOS that has an updated algorithm for making the fan run longer and stronger.

It sounds like overheating. Check the vents and filter and clean them. when you turn it on, listen to make sure the fan is running. Good Luck!

TV comes on, but shuts off after 3 minutes. I must wait at least 5 minutes to get it to turn back on again. TV will ONLY stay on if DVD drawer is OPEN!

dvd is overheating its circuit. Keep the tray open to dry up condensation. then leave TV on standby to keep moisture out.

It turns off within 5 minutes of it turning on

Yes, this could be caused by overheating. If this is due to overheating, it's most likely that the processor has burnt up. You will need to take it in for a professional hands-on diagnostic in order to find the exact cause of the problem. Overheating can cause several different issues within a machine.
