Try NOT connecting your camera to your computer.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program such as Picasa.

SOURCE: Help! Sony Cybershot DSC-S40 won't load to XP Home

This type of hookup works fine on my computers that have XP Home. It sounds like the problem is with your computer. Do you know for sure that the USB on your computer is working? If you are not sure....You should check to see if Universal Serial Bus is listed in the Device Manager.

Downloaded driver for cybershot dsc s500, then try to interface camera with computer, pc doesnt see the camera in control panel or my computer removable hard drive.

Sony has the roughest firmware known to man for digital cameras. If running Windows XP or Vista you can simply connect the camera to the USB port and let the computer do the rest. Picbrige works the best for it downloads the quickest. Picbrige will be on your cameras list of choices to use for downloading

So many video/picture programs will work with this camera. I use it with both Vista and XP OS. I never loaded software on Vista PC. I just use the "Start/Computer/Disk F (on my PC)" I just hook up the USB cable to camera and PC and then click on Disk F. You should then see the picture files and you can click and drag these files to a photo folder that you designate.

You may have a bad cable or bad connection between the camera and the PC. How do you know "there is a connection" if it's not doing anything? Try another USB port, too.
Have you had this problem from day one? Did you install the software from the disc that came with the camera? You may want to reload it and make sure you have the camera's selector in the correct position for downloading. My wife has a similar Cyber-Shot and I believe that is required.

If those fail to resolve your problem, try using a (memory) card "dock" and bypass using the camera. Surely you or someone you know will have one for you to test this out to see that the card can communicate properly with the PC. As a pro, I never download images off my card using my Nikon.

Step One: Reread the instructions on how to connect the camera to the computer, paying particular attention to what mode the camera should be in. Step Two: If the Sony instructions don't say what mode the camera shoud be in: Make sure that the camera is turned on and in "Playback" mode (the mode where you can view the photos on the LCD), before connecting it to the computer.
