Question about LaCie Big Disk (LAC300966U) 1024 GB Hard Drive
The icon does not appear on desk top, it does appear on the HD but only as a folder.. and i can not access the contents.. though my itunes is accessing the library.. help!!
Sounds like your drive might've gone hidden check in the disk management console under control panel>administrative tools>
computer mgt>disk mgt
see if the drive is disabled or there's like a mini no enter sign in there might be the reason why oh yeah also TweakUI and other programs are known to mess up with Lacie so google that and you should be able to find out some tips to help you
Also Partition Magic can actually unhide hard drives that are "stubborn" so that program might help as well other wise read my instructions below specifically the3 important notes and second half in your case...
Before you read this solution!!!! READ 3 IMPORTANT NOTES!
1. If you dropped it and it's clicking continuously sorry but it's probably trashed... When you call up Lacie about the Warranty DO NOT TELL THEM YOU DROPPED IT they will void out your warranty and you will end up having to buy another HD adding insult to injury when you lost your files as well... just say it's not working... It's not lying It's just called sticking it to corporate glutons who from whispers I've heard sell refurbished Lacie drives as new ones to ignorant customers
2. I've been doing some research and certain programs like TweakUI a program that Microsoft installs which can be found in your control panel does conflict with the Lacie HD
3.This problem occurs whether or not you use a firewire or usb or sata so if you don't have one of these sockets in your computer
don't buy extra equipment
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaactually Windows regardless of XP or Vista tends to screw up when it comes to Lacie drives...
This is how you fix it for sure:
go to control panel
computer management console
open up the disk management section
you'll see your C: drive or what other drives you may have already set up
you'll see one drive that doesn't have anything assigned to it no drive letter or anything 95% of the time that will probably be your lacie drive fresh out the box
Only thing you gotta do now is enable that drive by right clicking on the grey box next to it where it should say disk and for the sake of simplicity let's say it says Disk 1 or Disk 2 whatever
Enable it then partition it using NTFS if you're only going to use it on windows and FAT32 if you want to be able to use it on both MAC and PC
If you already have things on your hard drive from before and it just started acting up:
Try doing these 3 things:
First Lacie said that the drives can be tempermental when you don't shut them down right... so you would have to
disconnect all wires
connect power cord only and plug it in
turn it on wait a couple of secs.
connect usb cable to drive then to computer
that's one way of fixing it
if that doesn't work
you can try going to control panel> system> hardware> device manager
in there try and see if you have anything with a yellow question mark or exclamation point or a red X next to a USB controller or
Composite device or to Mass Storage Device under USB peripherals
If it has either of those just right click on the device and click update driver
If not right click mass storage device> uninstall
right click composite device> uninstall
right click on icon in lower left hand corner to remove device safely
choose the drive > remove safely> use turn off switch to turn it off...
Now turn it back on and it should reinstall itself
If that still doesn't work there's a couple of tutorials on how to recover files from faulty Lacie drives you can google that and it should be able to help you out for the most part...
This may involve opening up the casing and removing the hard drive not the internals and connecting it to your desktop directly

worst case scenario you may have to repartition/format your drive and it should be back to normal at this point your going to have to call

Shut down the PC, unplug power to the drive for 30 min. Plug power back in and start the PC back up.
