Question about Canon PowerShot S1 IS Digital Camera

1 Answer

Flash will not pop up. Camera was returned to Canon but not repaired because warranty had expired. Problem was diagnosed as software, not mechanical-estimate $300.00. Flash did pop up once and operate properly but refuses to do so again. Is there a way to manually deploy it? The rest of the camera works fine.

This also happened to my camera and I am able to pop the flash up manually by flicking it up with the edge of my fingernail. It helps to simultaneously press down on the piece just above the microphone (I think) which is just above the viewfinder. That gives a little leverage.

Canon EOS Rebel T4i 650d flash pops up but does not work.. Camera is 2 months old any suggestions please

I suggest you return the camera back to the shop and get the camera repaired or replaced as it would be still under warranty.
If you try to fix it yourself you may void your warranty.

Built in flash dosen't pop up

5 error is a mirror return error.

The reason or this error message is that the mirror not is returning after a shot. To normalize the camera, a second press on the trigger button is necessary. 4. Note that all functions operate perfect, and the mirror slides smooth in its trace.

The 5 error often happens when using 3rd party lenses (Sigma, Tamron, etc.) which cause incompatibility problems. Were you using a non-Canon lens?

Also clean all contacts with a pencil eraser. Do this with your battery contacts as well and try fresh batteries.

Canon d60 - Built-in flash will not pop up

There may be something obstructing it from popping open. Inspect the flash area carefully. You could remove the battery and put it back in to see if it corrects the problem. Also, check the flash settings in the menu to make sure that the flash is set to operate. If all of those fail then take the camera in for warranty repair. If the warranty has expired and nothing else works I would suggest getting an external flash for you camera. You will be amazed how much better your photos come out using an external flash. If you go that route then I would suggest going to a camera shop or department to make sure the flash will work for you before purchasing. If you just want a small flash a little better than the built-in, get the SB400. It's only around $125. The SB600 is much better, but will cost almost twice as much (but I think it's worth it).

They work beautifully in auto, but the SB600 will reach much farther and give you less red eye. Good Luck you have a great camera!

My Canon Powershot SD880 is emitting smoke.

This appears to be a common problem with Canon SD series cameras and especially common with the SD880. Canon must be aware of the problem, and since they have not recalled the cameras they must think it is not a fire/injury hazard. Distribution of the SD880 was suddenly stopped despite excellent reviews. If enough of us tell Canon we want these cameras fixed or replaced, even if they are out of warranty, maybe they will FixUs!

I have a Canon Digital Rebel XTI and the flash pops up but doesn't fire in any mode. Is there something I can do to fix this?

It sounds to me as if the xenon bulb within the built in flash has expired.  It's a quick and easy job for a qualified service engineer to repair this for you.

The flash on my d40x will no longer fire. the flash pops but nothing else happens! i have tried resetting but to no avail. i first noticed the problem while i was travelling so i couldn't send it off to be...

I do not want to speak down to you. If you pop up the flash and it does not fire it may be the mode. If the camera is in an auto mode and it feels there is NOT enough light to take the photo it will automatically pop up the flash and take the photo using flash. If it is in auto and it pops up the flash and it does not use it you may have a problem.

In most cases the best mode to use is P. In P mode (Programmed Auto) the flash NEVER automatically pops up (I find that very annoying). It will ONLY fire after you pop it up and take a photo. So with the camera in P. Take some photos with the flash down. Then try to take some photos with the flash up. It may also help to have fully charged batteries. Flash circuit uses lots of power for a short time to charge a capacitor. If the battery is too weak to charge the capacitor it will NOT fire the flash. It may have a RED LED or an INDICATOR in the View Finder that tells you the FLASH is READY.

XTi 400D flash

It appears that the small hook that holds the flash down is not latching properly and perhaps needs replacement. If your camera is still under warranty, call Canon Customer care. Even if the warranty has just expired (like 1 or 2 months), they generally honor it and get the service done free of cost.
