Yes, the adapter would only work with its compatible software driver. Which can be downloaded from the below link:
http://kb.netgear.com
Please enter the model make of the adapter on the box and it will take you to the download page.

You can download the software for this device from the Netgear web site.
You'll need to be able to figure out whether your adapter is V1, V2, V3, etc. as required from that page.
